Sailors Sunset resilient in Los Angeles score Everest Stables' homebred SAILORS SUNSET (Petionville) was passed briefly in midstretch but fought back gamely to capture the $105,800 Los Angeles H. (G3) over the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park on Saturday. Taking the lead soon after the start, the Marcelo Polanco charge established splits of :21 4/5 and :44 1/5 for the opening half-mile, responded from a challenge from 3-5 choice Peace Chant (War Chant) in the lane, and held that one at bay by a half-length at the wire. The final time for six panels was 1:09, and the 4-1 third choice was worth $10.40, $3.40 and $3. Peace Chant tracked the leader early before trying him in the stretch, ultimately settling for the place. The favorite paid $2.60 and $2.10 and finished off the $12 exacta ($1). Northern Soldier (Yankee Victor) raced in third throughout but could never get to the top pair, settling for the show at 9-1. The third-placer paid $3 and sat on the bottom of the $38.70 trifecta ($1). Turnbolt (Deputy Minister) was next and followed by second choice Ramsgate (Runaway Groom), while Corazondelcampeon (Comic Strip) was withdrawn. Sailors Sunset upped his lifetime line to 17-6-3-2, $308,090. The gelding captured a trio of stakes events last year, including the Vernon O. Underwood S. (G3), Foothill S. and Saguaro S, as well as placing in the Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup H. (G2) most recently. The winner was bred in Kentucky and produced from the stakes-winning Cayman Sunset (Wolf Power [SAf]), making him a full brother to an unnamed yearling filly.
