Filly raids Black-Eyed Susan

Glencrest Farm LLC's PANTY RAID (Include) patiently stalked the pacesetting Baroness Thatcher (Johannesburg) in fourth along the rail in Friday's $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2), surged to take command from between rivals and went on to score a length victory under jockey Edgar Prado. The Todd Pletcher-trained three-year-old was sent off the near 5-2 second choice and returned $6.80, $3.40 and $2.60 to her faithful supporters while keying the $24 exacta, $58 trifecta and $276.60 superfecta (2-1-3-5).

Baroness Thatcher, the 8-5 favorite in the field of eight, quickly moved to the front, leading her rivals through splits of :24 and :48. Just to her outside was Enchanting Star (Service Stripe), followed by Grace Happens (Aptitude) and Panty Raid saving ground on the rail. Enchanting Star turned up the pressure on Baroness Thatcher through six furlongs in 1:11 4/5, but began backing up after that as the steady fractions began to take their toll.

Baroness Thatcher was still in front entering the stretch, but found fresh fillies ranging up to challenge, including Panty Raid, who split rivals to take over strides before the line. The eventual winner had enough in reserve to hold Winning Point (Point Given) and a game Baroness Thatcher, stopping the clock for nine furlongs on the fast dirt in 1:50.

"I could see at the half-mile pole Edgar was asking her for a little more," said Pletcher, who will send out Circular Quay (Thunder Gulch) and King of the Roxy (Littleexpectations) in Saturday's Preakness S. (G1). "It looks to me like she's a filly that's very steady. She keeps coming and that's why I thought the mile and an eighth would suit her very well. I don't know that she quickened as much as she stayed on the same pace. That's what makes the good ones, the ones that can carry their speed over a longer distance of ground."

Winning Point managed to get her neck in front to take second over Baroness Thatcher, paying $4 and $2.80 at 3-1 while show was worth $2.60. It was another eight lengths back to Moon Catcher (Malibu Moon), who was just a neck in front of Fibbalator (Jump Start). Finishing out the order under the wire were Enchanting Star, Grace Happens and Fee Fi Fo Fum (Giant's Causeway).

Panty Raid made her stakes debut in the Bourbonette Breeders' Cup S. (G3) on Turfway Park's Polytrack, just missing the win by a head. She returned on Keeneland's version of the Polytrack to take an allowance prior to this one and more than doubled her earnings to $342,275 to go along with a 5-3-1-0 career mark.

Bred by Heaven Trees Farm in Kentucky, the dark bay miss is out of the stakes-placed Adventurous Di (Private Account), making her a half-sister to listed hero Franc and an unnamed juvenile miss, both by Woodman. Panty Raid sold twice, going for $110,000 as a Fasig-Tipton July yearling before coming to her current connections for $275,000 as a Keeneland April two-year-old.
