Worldly circles the field in Will Rogers

Christopher Wright's WORLDLY (GB) (Selkirk) went widest of all in the stretch and pulled away to a half-length win in the $108,200 Will Rogers S. (G3) over the firm Hollywood Park turf course on Saturday. The Ben Cecil charge was content to settle well off the pace in the early stages, as Hurry Home Warren (Mancini) led the field through ambitious splits of :23 2/5 and :47 1/5 for the opening half-mile. As the field bunched approaching the final turn, jockey Victor Espinoza moved Worldly to the outside for his final run and the gelding responded, running past his rivals late to stop the timer in 1:35 for the one mile. The 8-5 choice paid $5.20, $3 and $2.40, while keying the $1 exotics: $8.10 exacta, $32 trifecta and $113.80 superfecta.

Silent Soul (Afternoon Deelites) was last after the opening four furlongs but closed well on the rail to earn the place, paying $3.40 and $2.40 as the 3-1 third choice. Mayor Bozarth (Deputy Commander) rallied between horses in the lane but fell a nose shy of second. The 6-1 fourth choice was good for $3.40. Hurry Home Warren completed the super another two lengths back and was trailed by Yario (Ire) (Danehill Dancer) and Candy's Bro (E Dubai). Sevengoldnmissiles (Golden Missile) and Laddies Poker (Stravinsky) were withdrawn.

Worldly notched his second score in succession since coming to the United States, improving his lifetime line to 5-3-1-0, $112,043. He was produced from the Group 3-placed Miss Universe (Warning [GB]) and has an unraced two-year-old half-sister named Comeback Queen (Nayef).

The winner was a bargain $18,501 purchase at the 2005 Tattersalls October sale.
