Colt gets Even in Laz Barrera

Murrietta Racing Stable, Lopez, Lopez et al's TIME TO GET EVEN (Stephen Got Even) circled the field coming out of the turn in Sunday's $109,700 Lazaro Barrera Memorial S. (G3) at Hollywood Park and ran down Principle Secret (Sea of Secrets) late in a cavalry charge to post a neck win. In the process, the Walther Solis-trained sophomore gave jockey David Flores his 3,000th career victory.

Euroglide (Honor Glide) and Desert Code (E Dubai) were quickest from the gate, but it was the former who took over pacesetting duties through a quarter in :22 while racing well off the rail. Principle Secret was quick to take advantage of the opening along the inside, slipping through to take over through a half in :44 1/5 and three-quarters in 1:08 4/5. Slowly pulling away from Euroglide in midstretch, the dark bay colt appeared ready to earn his first win since last August.

Time to Get Even and Flores had other plans, though. Coming wide around the turn, the pair raced down the center of the track, just getting up to deny Principle Secret, Desert Code and Try to Fly (Trippi) in a blanket finish.

Time to Get Even was sent off the 7-1 fourth choice and paid $16.20, $6 and $4.80 while keying the $29.50 exacta ($1). Principle Secret, the 2-1 favorite, gave back $3.60 and $2.60 for holding Desert Code to third by a nose. Show was worth $2.80 at 3-1 while ending the $143.50 trifecta ($1). It was another half-length back to Try to Fly, who closed late to complete the $445 superfecta (8-4-7-3) ($1).

Abalanche (Snow Ridge), Euroglide, Taxi Fleet (Northern Afleet) and Another Kris (Kissin Kris) finished out the order under the wire. Scat Thief (Cat Thief), Hurry Home Warren (Mancini) and Robbos Courage (Mr. Greeley) were all withdrawn.

Time to Get Even began his career in March, finishing second to Euroglide in a maiden special weight event at Santa Anita. Returning to that same track in April, the dark bay colt rallied to break his maiden by 2 1/2 lengths under Alex Bisono, who was scheduled to ride on Sunday but was forced to take off his mounts due to a sore ankle. That gave Flores the mount, and his milestone victory, aboard Time to Get Even in the colt's stakes debut. The three-year-old, who also presented his trainer with the first stakes win of his career, now owns a 3-2-0-0 mark and $102,620 in lifetime earnings.

Bred in Kentucky by Hilbert Thoroughbreds Inc., Time to Get Even was a Keeneland September yearling bargain, selling for $5,000 to his current connections. He is the first stakes winner out of Tomisue's Pleasure (Seeking the Gold) and has an unnamed juvenile full sister as well as a 2007 full brother.
