Bob and John prevails in wet Lone Star

Stonerside Stable's homebred BOB AND JOHN (Seeking the Gold) overhauled the pacesetter on the far turn and determinedly fought off the challenge of Sweetnorthernsaint (Sweetsouthernsaint) through the stretch to record a neck decision in Monday's $388,000 Lone Star Park H. (G3). Over the very sloppy Grand Prairie, Texas, track, the Bob Baffert-trained four-year-old colt notched his third stakes victory when finishing the 1 1/16-mile event in 1:45. Bob and John just missed entering the millionaire's club, improving his career earnings to $996,330 with the $240,000 payday, and his mark now reads 14-5-3-3.

Winner of last year's Wood Memorial S. (G1) over a sloppy Aqueduct track, Bob and John was content to rate in second while Jonesboro (Sefapiano) led the way through fractions of :24 2/5 and :48 2/5. He easily advanced under jockey Garrett Gomez to get a head in front through six furlongs in 1:12 1/5, and battled the rest of the way with 3-5 favorite Sweetnorthernsaint, never relinquishing his narrow advantage throughout the stretch drive.

As the 7-5 second choice, Bob and John gave back $4.80, $2.60 and $2.10. Sweetnorthernsaint capped the $7.40 exacta and paid $2.20 and $2.10 for runner-up honors. It was 6 3/4 lengths back to Jonesboro, who returned $2.10, and Real Dandy (Yankee Victor) rounded out the order of finish in the four-horse race. Silent Pleasure (Real Quiet) was withdrawn.

Bred in Kentucky, Bob and John hails from Grade 3 queen Minister's Melody (Deputy Minister), who earned $451,470 and finished second in the 1997 La Brea S. (G1). The 13-year-old mare is also the dam of the stakes-winning filly Connie Belle (Storm Cat), a two-year-old colt named Star Time (Grand Slam), and a 2007 filly by Seeking the Gold. Bob and John also captured the Sham S. (G3) last season and was disqualified (placed third) from a victory in the Real Quiet S. He's placed in a total of five stakes.
