Delightful Kiss explodes to Ohio Derby romp Hobeau Farm's homebred DELIGHTFUL KISS (Kissin Kris) made a bold three-wide move at the three-eighths pole and pulled clear to an emphatic 3 1/2-length score in the $300,000 Ohio Derby (G2) at Thistledown on Saturday. The gelding had just one horse passed after the opening half-mile in :47 1/5, but began to pass horses with ease under Jeffrey Sanchez, eventually taking the lead and reaching the mile in 1:36 4/5. From there, the Pete Anderson charge just had to stay on the track as his competition had no answer. The final time for the 1 1/8-mile fast track feature was 1:49 1/5, and the 24-1 shot paid $51.80, $23.60 and $8.20. Moyer's Pond (Monarchos) rated in midpack before putting in his best run late, but the race was virtually over when the gelding hit his best stride. Sent off at 7-1, the second-placer was worth $8 and $4 while completing the $249.20 exacta. Reporting For Duty (Deputy Commander) put in his customary late charge, falling just a neck shy of the place after racing in the rear for the opening six furlongs. Show paid $5.40, and the winning trifecta returned $1,590 with the 12-1 shot in third. Cowtown Cat (Distorted Humor), the 3-5 favorite, was in striking position for much of the contest but was one-paced late, settling for the show another 2 1/2 lengths back. The choice capped the $2,583.80 superfecta. Early leader Forty Grams (Distorted Humor) faded to fifth and was followed by Starbase (Tale of the Cat), Officer Rocket (GB) (Officer) and Danny Sez (King Cugat). Delightful Kiss earned his initial stakes win in here, upping his mark to 12-3-2-2 with earnings of $326,937. The gray was third in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) earlier this year. The Florida-bred is out of the winning French Deputy mare Deputy's Delight and has an unnamed yearling half-brother by Trust N Luck.
