Nashoba owns the key to Milady

Nashoba's Key upset the Balance in the Milady (Benoit Photos)

Warren B. Williamson's homebred NASHOBA'S KEY (Silver Hawk) made the transition from state-bred to graded company like a seasoned pro, rallying late under Joe Talamo to capture the $186,100 Milady Breeders' Cup H. (G2) at Hollywood Park on Sunday. The Carla Gaines-trained four-year-old broke well from her outside post and sat in fourth as 4-5 favorite Hystericalady (Distorted Humor) led the field through splits of :24 3/5, :47 4/5 and 1:11 3/5 for the opening six furlongs. As the leader made the turn for home, it appeared as though she would have little challenge on her way to the wire, but Nashoba's Key commenced her late run and made up ground with each stride, eventually completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 while three-quarters of a length clear on the Cushion Track. The 5-1 third choice paid $12.80, $4.60 and $2.40.

Hystericalady opened up a 2 1/2-length lead in the lane but had no answer for the closing winner, finishing 4 1/2 lengths clear in second. The runner-up paid $2.80 and $2.10 and completed the $17.20 exacta ($1). Balance (Thunder Gulch), the 8-5 second choice, tracked in third throughout and was one-paced late, earning the show and paying $2.10 in the process. The trifecta returned $33.40 ($1). Ballado's Thunder (Saint Ballado) was next and followed by Great Opinions (Rahy) and Memorette (Memo [Chi]), while Cantabria (GB) (Dansili [GB]) was withdrawn.

Nashoba's Key kept her unbeaten mark intact from four lifetime starts, boosting her earnings to $263,460 in the process. The bay eclipsed the Fran's Valentine S. in her stakes debut most recently.

The winner was bred in the Golden State and is the first foal produced from the multiple-winning Nashoba (Ire) (Caerleon). Nashoba's Key has a pair of unnamed half-siblings by In Excess (Ire), a two-year-old filly and a yearling colt.
