Marcavelly is the Prince Zayat Stables' MARCAVELLY (Johannesburg) exploded in the stretch to take Friday's $105,700 Hill Prince S. (G3) by a comfortable 1 1/4 lengths. The Bill Mott-trained sophomore rated off the early pace while saving ground, and all he needed was a clear lane turning for home. Edgar Prado switched him to the outside to find a seam, and Marcavelly burst through to take command. The even-money favorite reeled off the mile in 1:33 2/5 on Belmont Park's firm turf to return $4.10, $2.20 and $2.10. "He broke a little slow, but I was able to get a good spot," Prado said. "The last time (in the Crown Royal American Turf S. [G3]), he was a little rank and didn't finish the way he was supposed to (when fourth). Today, he sat beautifully right behind the speed. When he found a clear spot, he just took off." Distorted Reality (Distorted Humor) argued the pace through fractions of :24 2/5, :47 2/5 and 1:10 2/5 and kept on gamely through the stretch for runner-up honors. Although he was no match for Marcavelly, the 9-5 second choice finished 4 3/4 lengths clear of his nearest pursuer, paying $2.50 and $2.20. Codeword (Ire) (Dansili [GB]) checked in third as the longest shot on the board at 13-1, yielding $3.10 to show. The exotics were worth $7 (exacta) and $28.40 (3-1-6 trifecta). Reptilian Smarts (Include) and the early leader Storm in May (Tiger Ridge) completed the order of finish. Royal War Academy (Royal Academy) was withdrawn, along with the main-track only entrant, Believeinmenow (Tiznow). Marcavelly, who has recorded four victories and two seconds from seven starts, has now bankrolled $301,063. In his sophomore bow, he romped by 3 1/2 lengths in the Transylvania S. (G3) at Keeneland, but he failed to cope with the yielding turf at Churchill Downs when fourth in the Crown Royal American Turf. As a juvenile, the bay rolled to a 3 1/2-length tally in the Continental Mile S. at Monmouth Park, then chased eventual champion Dreaming of Anna (Rahy) in the Summer S. (Can-G3) at Woodbine, and finished second in the off-the-turf Bourbon S. at Keeneland after finding himself in the unaccustomed role of pacesetter. Bred by Harrison Stables Inc. in Kentucky, Marcavelly was sold for $210,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. He is out of the Majestic Light mare Dark Jewel, a full sister to multiple Grade 1 queen Hidden Light, who is herself the dam of 2005 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) winner and $2 million-earner Artie Schiller (El Prado [Ire]). Marcavelly is a half-brother to the stakes-placed Delong (Editor's Note), an unraced juvenile filly named Holy Helen (Holy Bull) and a 2007 colt by Cherokee Run.
