Marietta scores in Iowa Oaks

Darley's homebred MARIETTA (Machiavellian) raced in midpack while five wide down the backstretch of Friday night's $200,000 Iowa Oaks (G3), took over at the three-sixteenths pole and went on to post a 1 3/4-length victory under Rafael Bejarano. Trained by Eoin Harty, the dark bay miss completed 1 1/16 miles on the fast Prairie Meadows dirt in 1:43, paying $8.60, $5.80 and $3 as the 3-1 second choice.

Humble Janet (Humble Eleven) was forced six wide coming into the stretch, but still closed for second by 1 3/4 lengths, giving back $14.80 and $6 at 25-1 while ending the $99.20 exacta. Grade 2 winner High Again (High Yield), favored at 3-5 off her runner-up finish in the Dogwood Breeders' Cup S. (G3), stalked the pace in third early through splits of :23 1/5 and :46 3/5. She then grabbed the lead, getting six furlongs in 1:11 1/5, but couldn't hold off the top two in the lane, returning $2.20 and finishing the $381.80 trifecta (7-9-6).

Le Chateau (Chester House) rallied to take fourth after coming eight wide in the stretch, and was followed by Swift Temper (Giant's Causeway), Acrosstheborder (Include), Comarillo (Deputy Commander), Irish Party (Twining) and Alba Dabas Secret (Madraar). Byenne (Jambalaya Jazz) was withdrawn.

Marietta broke her maiden at Keeneland in April, then shipped to Canada to run third in the Selene S. (Can-G3) at Woodbine. She earned her first stakes score with this one and now boasts a 7-2-2-1 line with $186,723 in lifetime earnings.

The Kentucky-bred three-year-old is out of 1994 Demoiselle S. (G2) and Pocahontas S. winner Minister Wife (Deputy Minister), making her a half-sister to listed winner Thousand Islands (GB) (Dubai Millennium) and an unnamed 2007 colt by Pulpit.
