Black Seventeen will not be denied in Carry Back

Black Seventeen was a game winner of the Carry Back (Jim Lisa Photos)

Trainer Brian Koriner et al's BLACK SEVENTEEN (Is It True) re-rallied after being confronted by Teuflesberg (Johannesburg) in the stretch to post a one-length win in the $300,000 Carry Back S. (G2) at Calder on Saturday. Piloted by Clinton Potts, the 7-5 favorite completed the six furlongs in 1:09 4/5 over the good main oval and returned $4.80, $2.80 and $2.80.

"I knew Teuflesberg wasn't going to go away, so my horse really had to gut it out all the way," Koriner said. "He showed his gameness."

The winner broke alertly and led the field through swift fractions of :21 3/5 and :44 2/5 for the opening half-mile while being pressed by Finallymadeit (Concerto) and second-choice Teuflesberg. Turning for home, Teuflesberg moved to the fore, drew on even terms with the leader, and the duo began to separate themselves from the rest of the group. It appeared that Black Seventeen would be passed late, but he courageously found more in the latter stages to earn the graded score. Teuflesberg ran a winning race in defeat, finishing three lengths clear of his nearest pursuer. The runner-up paid $2.60 and $2.60 and completed the $13.60 exacta. Yesbyjimminy (Yes It's True) made a threatening move entering the lane wide but could not keep up with the top pair late, settling for third at nearly 10-1. Show paid $3.40 and the trifecta was worth $50. Pop Goes the Tiger (Tiger Ridge) was another three lengths back in fourth, capping the $468 superfecta at 85-1.

Rather Clever (Montbrook) was next and followed by Finallymadeit, Fate Takes a Hand (Tale of the Cat), Indian Ashton (Tribal Rule) and Jeronimos Storm (Tiger Ridge).

Black Seventeen earned his third consecutive victory while upping his career mark to 6-4-0-1, $285,360. This was the first stakes win for the Florida-bred, whose lone stakes effort resulted in an eighth-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby (G1).

The winner was bred by Marilyn Lewis, Robert Smith and Saronda Smith, and brought the gavel down at $150,000 at the 2006 OBS February Two-Year-Olds in Training sale. He was produced from Fuzzy Navel (Strike the Anvil) and has an unnamed 2007 half-sister by Proud Accolade.

"The Breeders' Cup (Sprint [G1]) will be a big consideration for us, but we'll see how some of these other horses, like Smokey Stover (Put it Back), run," Koriner added. "Short term, we're looking at the (August 25) King's Bishop ([G1] at Saratoga)."
