Bilo holds on in Triple Bend Edward King's BILO (Bertrando) led at every call en route to a diminishing head win in the $300,000 Triple Bend Invitational H. (G1) over the Cushion Track at Hollywood on Saturday. The Martin Jones trainee sped to the front early and dictated fractions of :21 4/5, :44 1/5 and 1:08 2/5 for the opening six panels, prior to completing the seven panels in 1:21 3/5 under Joe Talamo. Sent off at nearly 10-1, the winner gave back $21.60, $7.40 and $4.60 while keying the $1 exotics; $47.40 exacta, $266.60 trifecta and $975.50 superfecta (9-5-3-6). Surf Cat (Sir Cat) was hard ridden halfway through the race, got clear on the rail turning for home and was gaining late in a strong runner-up performance. The five-year-old, who was making his first start in more than a year, paid $3.60 and $2.80 as the 8-5 choice. Battle Won (Honour and Glory) was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third at 6-1, good for $4.40. Siren Lure (Joyeux Danseur) finished off the super at 6-1 and was trailed by Sailors Sunset (Petionville), Gotaghostofachance (Silver Ghost) and 9-5 second choice Silent Name (Jpn) (Sunday Silence). El Roblar (War Chant) and Raise the Bluff (Pine Bluff) were withdrawn. Bilo earned his first stakes win in this one, with his best previous black-type performances coming in the Golden Eagle Farm S. and Tiznow S. Offered for a claiming price last out, the winner now boasts $434,036 in earnings from a 14-6-2-2 mark. The winner was bred in the Golden State by Ed Nahem and produced from Raffle's Bag (Devil's Bag). Bilo has a trio of unraced full siblings, an unnamed two-year-old filly, an unnamed juvenile colt and a 2007 filly named Samantha's Melody.
