After Market exudes class in Eddie Read

After Market has emerged as the leading turf horse in California (Benoit Photo)
Martin and Pam Wygod's homebred AFTER MARKET (Storm Cat) spotted his rivals three to six pounds in the $400,000 Eddie Read H. (G1) on Sunday, but the weight had little impact on the outcome as the 3-5 favorite cruised past a clear Out of Control (Brz) (Vettori) late to post a 1 1/2-length score under Alex Solis. Tracking in third early as Out of Control and Rob Roy (Lear Fan) dictated the early tempo, the John Shirreffs charge was asked for his best at the head of the lane and once the four-year-old got into stride by midstretch, it was virtually over. The streaking dark bay completed the 1 1/8 miles over the firm turf in 1:47 1/5, and paid $3.40, $2.20 and $2.10 while keying the $3.80 exacta ($1).

Out of Control pressed the pace early, took the lead after six furlongs, opened up a two-length advantage in midstretch and finished 3 3/4 lengths clear in second. The 2-1 second choice paid $3.20 and $2.40. Rob Roy, the nearly 4-1 third choice, led early but had little left late. He still managed to hold third while 4 1/2 lengths ahead of his closest pursuer. Show paid $2.60. Fast and Furious (Fr) (Singspiel [Ire]) and Atlando (Ire) (Hernando [Fr]) completed the order of finish, while Valiant Effort (Bertrando) was withdrawn.

After Market continues to add to his impressive resume, which includes tallies in the Charles Whittingham Memorial H. (G1), National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. (G2), Inglewood H. (G3) and Lexington S. (G3). The mega-talented turf star improved his lifetime mark to 11-7-0-0, $703,685.

Bred in Kentucky, After Market is the first registered foal out of the Grade 1-winning mare Tranquility Lake (Rahy), who amassed more than $1.6 million in earnings in the course of her four-year career. Among her nine stakes wins, she garnered the 1999 Gamely Breeders' Cup H. (G1) and 2000 Yellow Ribbon S. (G1). She has since produced four full brothers to After Market -- a well regarded sophomore named Jalil who broke his maiden last month in England for Godolphin, an unraced juvenile named Inflection Point, an unnamed yearling and a 2007 colt. Out of Grade 2-placed Winter's Love (Danzig), Tranquility Lake is herself a half-sister to three-time Grade 2 winner and successful sire Benchmark (Alydar). This is the family of 1983 Belmont S. (G1) hero Caveat.
