The Great Face takes Longacres Mile Track President Ron Crockett's THE GREAT FACE (Cahill Road) gamely outdueled Raise the Bluff (Pine Bluff), another Crockett colorbearer, by a head at the wire to annex the $391,250 Longacres Mile H. (G3) over the sloppy going at Emerald Downs on Sunday. Breaking alertly and taking the lead shortly after the gates opened, the five-year-old carved out splits of :23 3/5, :46 2/5 and 1:10 1/5 for the opening six furlongs. Entering the final turn, the gelding was confronted by a slew of challengers. Raise the Bluff emerged as the most serious danger in the stretch, and the two began to separate themselves from the pack inside the final furlong. Trained by Tom Wenzel and piloted by Juan Gutierrez, The Great Face looked like a beaten horse in the latter stages but found more in holding off the 3-1 favorite. The nearly 6-1 fourth choice paid $13.40, $7.20 and $5.60 while getting the one mile in 1:35 2/5. Raise the Bluff rated in midpack early before putting in his final run, coming up just shy while finishing 3 1/4 lengths clear of his nearest pursuer. The runner-up was worth $4.20 and $3.20 while completing the $33.70, all-Crockett, exacta ($1). Wasserman (Cahill Road) was last early but closed well to garner show honors by a nose, paying $8.40 at 22-1. The trifecta returned $329.60 ($1). Schoolin You (You and I) capped the $5,392.80 superfecta ($1) at 22-1 and was followed by Gotaghostofachance (Silver Ghost), Trickey Trevor (Demaloot Demashoot), Norm's Nephew (Jazzing Around), Sinister Minister (Old Trieste), Diligent Prospect (Diligence), Don'twritemeoff (Silver Ghost), Wanna Runner (El Corredor) and Courting Seattle (Doneraile Court). The Great Face earned his third straight win to improve his mark to 15-7-2-1, $337,159. The five-year-old bay captured the Mt. Rainier Breeders' Cup H. last out, and owns a placing in the Fox Sports Network H. The winner was bred in Washington by Patricia Murphy and attracted a bid of $21,000 as a yearling at the 2003 Washington September sale. Produced from the stakes-placed Irish Toast (Synastry), The Great Face has an unraced two-year-old half-brother named Atta Boy Roy (Tribunal).
