General Jumbo scores in Kentucky Cup Turf Thomas Conway's GENERAL JUMBO (GB) (Dansili [GB]) took over in midstretch and held off a stubborn Fri Guy (Theatrical [Ire]) in annexing the $200,000 Kentucky Cup Turf S. (G3), the feature event of the Kentucky Cup Turf Festival on Saturday at Kentucky Downs. Trailing the field after the opening four furlongs, the five-year-old steadily advanced while four wide on the far turn and gamely outclassed his seven rivals under strong urging from Jeremy Rose. The Graham Motion trainee clocked 1 1/2 firm turf miles in 2:26 4/5, and rewarded backers with mutuels of $6.80, $4.20 and $3.20 as the near 5-2 favorite. Fri Guy was always prominent, put a head in front between calls late, and stayed on well to be three clear lengths in second of his nearest pursuer. The 5-1 runner-up returned $7.20 and $4.80 while completing the $45.80 exacta. Golden Strategy (Strategic Mission) saved ground to the final run but couldn't keep up with the top pair late, garnering show honors at 5-1. The chestnut was worth $3.60 and concluded the $285.60 trifecta. Demeteor (Dehere) sat on the bottom of the $1,572.40 superfecta (6-8-4-3) at 6-1 and was followed by Dan McGrew (Smart Strike), Starspangled Gator (Editor's Note), Lord Carmen (Ordway) and Yate's Black Cat (Black Minnaloushe). General Jumbo improved his career mark to 22-4-6-1 in earning his initial stakes score. The dark bay, who now has earnings of $275,447, was second in the John's Call S. at Saratoga prior to this one. The winner was bred in Great Britain by Snailwell Stud Co Ltd., and produced from the unraced Aunt Jemima (Busted), making him a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Azhar (Night Shift). General Jumbo was purchased for $29,839 at the 2003 Tattersalls October sale.
