Lahudood surprises in Flower Bowl

Shadwell Stable's homebred LAHUDOOD (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]), who was coming off a well-beaten seventh in the Beverly D. S. (G1), produced a stunning form reversal in Saturday's $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational S. (G1) at Belmont Park. Settled in a ground-saving spot early by Alan Garcia, the Kiaran McLaughlin trainee tracked the pace carved out by Rosinka (Ire) (Soviet Star) through splits of :24 3/5, :49, 1:12 3/5 and 1:35 4/5. Inside the final furlong, the 21-1 Lahudood exploded along the rail to burst past Rosinka and 4-5 favorite Wait a While (Maria's Mon), completing the 1 1/4-mile test in 1:59 on the firm inner turf. The four-year-old bay provided healthy payouts of $44.40, $16.40 and $8.20 while spearheading exotics worth $565 (exacta), $2,161 (trifecta) and $19,509 (1-7-6-2 superfecta).

"This was the first time everything went perfect," McLaughlin said. "She wants to be covered up and make a run on firm ground. (Shadwell manager) Rick Nichols told me that the boss (Sheikh Hamdan) didn't send her over here to be an allowance horse."

The nearly 18-1 Rosinka fell three-quarters of a length short in second after a brave front-running performance, giving back $14.20 and $7.10. Wait a While appeared to be in the ideal stalking position throughout but could manage only third, another half-length back, to pay $2.90. Hostess (Chester House), the longest shot on the board at 81-1, closed from last for fourth, just missing third by a neck. Next came Argentina (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), Royal Highness (Ger) (Monsun), Alexander Tango (Ire) (Danehill Dancer), My Typhoon (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) and Masseuse (Dynaformer).

Lahudood was earning her first graded score, with her only previous stakes success coming in the 2006 Prix de Liancourt. She also placed second in last year's Prix de Malleret (Fr-G2), Prix de Royallieu (Fr-G2) and Prix de Psyche (Fr-G3). Sent to the United States for her 2007 campaign, Lahudood captured an allowance at Belmont in her second start of the season before checking in 9 1/2 lengths behind Royal Highness in the Beverly D. on rain-softened ground at Arlington. Her record now reads 11-3-5-1 with $545,173 in earnings.

Bred in Great Britain, Lahudood is out of the winning Arazi mare Rahayeb (GB), who is also the dam of an unraced juvenile filly named Kareemah (Peintre Celebre) and an unnamed yearling colt by Sinndar. Lahudood springs from the family of once-beaten dual classic winner Nashwan (Blushing Groom [Fr]), multiple Group 1-winning highweight Nayef (Gulch), multiple English Group 2 hero Unfuwain (Northern Dancer) and Japanese superstar Deep Impact (Sunday Silence).

McLaughlin intimated that the October 27 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) would likely be next.

"I don't know if she is Breeders' Cup nominated, but it wouldn't be a problem if we had to supplement her," the horseman said.
