Danzon dominates Distaff

Joseph Allen's DANZON (Royal Academy) made a bold move on the outside on the final turn and strode home an emphatic five-length heroine of the $160,000 Kentucky Cup Distaff S. (G3) at Turfway Park on Saturday. Loping in next-to-last for the opening half-mile under Julien Leparoux, the four-year-old miss began to pick off horses with ease when asked and found little resistance from a clear Delicate Dynamite (Old Trieste) in the latter stages, reaching 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 2/5 on the Polytrack. The Patrick Biancone charge was sent off the 2-1 choice and paid $6.40, $4.20 and $3 while topping the $55.60 exacta, $252.60 trifecta and $1,664.60 superfecta (1-7-2-3).

"She's a nice filly," Biancone said. "She's been training well and we thought she'd like the Polytrack. She's a filly that likes soft going and with all the dry weather, we haven't been able to run her on the turf. We have a lot of options for her. She's eligible for everything. We'll look at the (October 21) E.P. Taylor ([Can-G1] at Woodbine) and (the Breeders' Cup) Filly & Mare Turf ([G1] at Monmouth Park on October 27)."

Delicate Dynamite cruised to the front nearing the stretch and opened up a brief daylight lead but had no chance with the winner, settling for the place while one length clear of her nearest foe. The second-placer was worth $9.60 and $4.40 at 12-1. Kettleoneup (Victory Gallop) was last for the opening half-mile but closed well to gain the third spot at nearly 4-1. The third choice paid $3.60. Sweetdownthelane (Quiet American) sat on the bottom of the super at 14-1 and was followed by Mama I'm Home (Wheaton), Pleasant Hill (Pleasant Tap), Warrior Girl (War Chant), Eyes on Eddy (Touch Gold), India (Hennessy), Ms. Lydonia (Labeeb [GB]) and Tuffted (Magloire). I'm In Love (Zafonic), Leo's Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Maggie Slew (Seattle Slew) were scratched.

Danzon boosted her earnings to $343,420 from a 14-5-2-3 lifetime line. The French Group 3 heroine was third in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic S. (G1) versus males, third in the Mint Julep H. (G3) and fifth in the Diana S. (G1) in her past three races.

The winner, bred in Kentucky by Woodcote Stud Ltd., was a $79,238 purchase at the 2004 Tattersalls October sale. She is out of the winning Zappeuse (Kingmambo) and has an unnamed yearling half-sister by Giant's Causeway as well as a 2007 half-brother by War Chant.
