TCA creates retraining and retirement fund Thoroughbred Charities of American (TCA) will officially launch its newly established Racehorse Retraining and Retirement Fund (RRRF) on Friday at the TCA Stallion Season auction. The fund will help provide support for the programs which address the problem of the fate of racehorses once their racing careers have ended. The Jockey Club's new Foal Registration check off has enabled the TCA to create the RRRF. The voluntary check off allows Thoroughbred owners and breeders to select one of four amounts -- $25, $50, $75 and $100 -- to be designated for the TCA and Thoroughbred Retirement Fund (TRF). They can also fill in the amount of their choice on the form. "The check off program will provide a tremendous boost to the TCA's racehorse retraining and adoption efforts and we hope that all owners and breeders will participate in it," said Herb Moelis, president of TCA. "We are grateful to The Jockey Club for its support and we hope other industry stakeholders do their part." As an incentive to encourage participation, The Jockey Club will match the check off amount on a dollar-to-dollar basis up to $200,000 in 2009. "With the support of most stallion farms who donate seasons for our auction, TCA has distributed more than $15 million in annual grants, including those to equine adoption centers for the retired racehorse," said Liz Harris, executive director of TCA. "The Jockey Club initiative, together with support from racing's other sectors, will help combat the problem of the unwanted horse before it tarnishes our industry." The TCA Stallion season auction will be held at the Keeneland Entertainment Center on Friday. For more information about the auction, contact Harris at 859-312-5531. Donations for the RRRF may be sent to TCA, P.O. Box 3856, Midway, Kentucky, 40347.
