TwinSpires.com Players' Pool strikes for $408,356 at Saratoga

The TwinSpires.com Players' Pool made the most of Wednesday's lucrative Pick-6 pool at Saratoga, constructing one of the four winning tickets worth $377,883. With 31 consolation tickets, each paying $983, the Players' Pool showed gross winnings of $408,356.

Wednesday's Pick-6 pool swelled following three straight days of a carryover at the Saratoga Springs, New York, track. The TwinSpires.com Players' Pool panel, which consists of three expert handicappers, was making their first attempt at a Pick 6 since hitting a $552,535.80 ticket at Belmont Park in early June.

"This was a very tricky card," explained Rich Nilsen, who has managed the Players' Pool since 2004. "With five turf races including two for juveniles, there were many 'unknowns' in the six-race sequence. But we also knew that a card like this held the potential for a great payoff.

"One of the separators for us was using the maiden winner (Fancy Point) of the $70,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes, who had excellent BRIS numbers in her debut and was from a very strong turf family according to the American Produce Records CD-Rom."

Fancy Point (Point Given), who led wire to wire in the 8TH race, helped the Players' Pool finish strong. Crowned General provided a boost when taking the 9TH at nearly 10-1, and Slick Wheelie (Wheelaway) added further value when capturing the afternoon's finale at 7-1.

Using funds aimed at winning the largest possible payoff, the Players' Pool has produced a healthy flat-bet profit for TwinSpires members since its beginning in 2004.
