Unrivaled Belle faces Pletcher trio in Ogden Phipps

UNRIVALED BELLE (Unbridled's Song), second to LIFE AT TEN (Malibu Moon) in last year's Ogden Phipps H. (G1), will face that opponent and four other fillies and mares on Saturday in the 2011 renewal of the $250,000 race going 1 1/16 miles.

The 2010 Ogden Phipps was the first of three straight runner-up finishes for Unrivaled Belle. The Bill Mott trainee would go on to fill the second spot in the Ruffian H. (G1) at Saratoga and in the Beldame S. (G1) at Belmont. In the latter race, the gray was once again behind Life at Ten on the wire.

Unrivaled Belle put it all together, though, with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs in November. She's made two starts this year, finishing a distant third behind AWESOME MARIA (Maria's Mon) in the Rampart S. (G3) at Gulfstream Park and just missed by a half-length to the closing Blind Luck (Pollard's Vision) while going for a title defense in the La Troienne S. (G2) at Churchill in her most recent start.

"She has done wonderfully since that race," assistant trainer Leana Williford said. "She's breezing and doing well. All systems are 'go.' She has run very well here, but she runs well everywhere. It'd be nice to get a pace in front of her and have her settle."

While Life at Ten was touted as trainer Todd Pletcher's top distaffer last year, Awesome Maria has come on this season to make a name for herself and has been installed as the 7-5 morning line favorite for the Ogden Phipps. Unbeaten in three starts this season thus far, the four-year-old gray seeks her fifth graded victory and first in a Grade 1 following wins in the Sabin S. (G3), Rampart and Shuvee H. (G2).

John Velazquez, who was aboard for the filly's romps in the Sabin and Rampart, takes back the mount and will pilot the 124-pound highweight in the Ogden Phipps.

Stablemate Life at Ten, freshened following a poor performance in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic, has made two starts in 2011, finishing second by five lengths in a Gulfstream optional claimer and checking in a distant third in the Allaire duPont Distaff (G3) at Pimlico. She'll once again meet the top two finishers of the Allaire duPont, fellow Pletcher trainee SUPER ESPRESSO (Medaglia d'Oro) and PAYTON D'ORO (Medaglia d'Oro), in the Phipps.

"Looking at her last work (four furlongs in :47 4/5 at Belmont on June 5), it was exceptional," assistant trainer Jonathan Thomas said. "It was a very sharp, good work for her. I think we're back at a place where she has had some of her lifetime best races. With the way the race is setting up, I would imagine she should be forwardly placed. She likes taking the race by the scruff of the neck, and she should already be right there."

Thomas is hopeful Life at Ten will move forward in her third race off the layoff, even if her Allaire duPont performance was a cut below her best efforts.

"We thought she was training well going into that race down there," he admitted. "Tactically, she had no excuse. Physically, she came back fine. If anything, it was more of a head-scratcher."

With regular rider Velazquez jumping off to ride Awesome Maria, Life at Ten will have Cornelio Velasquez aboard for Saturday's race.

Super Espresso completes Pletcher's trio in the Phipps as the dark bay lass seeks to prove her Allaire duPont victory was no fluke. Sent off at 11-1 that day following an eased run in the grassy Bewitch S. (G3), the four-year-old miss returns to the track over which she broke her maiden in October.

"The biggest part has been her physical maturation over the past eight months," Thomas said. "She's a big filly, and she has grown into herself. She has gotten a lot of confidence from her runs, and we've kind of figured her style out. She's a very athletic, very sound, good-minded filly."

Payton d'Oro will be looking to turn the tables on Super Espresso in the Ogden Phipps after taking the lead in the stretch of the Allaire duPont before just being collared on the wire. That was only her second start off a near year-long break, and trainer Larry Jones will give a leg up to Gabriel Saez aboard the five-year-old mare for Saturday's race.

Stakes winner ABSINTHE MINDED (Quiet American), who's placed in the Apple Blossom H. (G1), Shuvee and Azeri S. (G3) this season, completes the field.

Once race prior to the Ogden Phipps, nine sophomores will go a mile on the Widener turf in the $100,000 Hill Prince S. (G3). Dual Grade 3 hero AIR SUPPORT (Smart Strike) is seeking to get back on the winning track following a third-place run in the American Turf S. (G2) last out. The Shug McGaughey runner, who has competed against nothing but graded company since breaking his maiden, opened his three-year-old season with a nose victory in the Transylvania S. (G3).

Alex Solis has the call aboard the 3-1 morning-line favorite from the rail.

Although Air Support is the most accomplished horse in the Hill Prince field, he will face competition from a number of talented newcomers, including the top three finishers -- CHINGLISH (War Front), HUMBLE AND HUNGRY (Limehouse) and MASTER DUNKER (Imperialism), respectively -- from the James W. Murphy S. on the Preakness Day undercard at Pimlico.
