Hansen, Shackleford highlight Gulfstream worktab

Undefeated three-year-old Hansen, a leading contender for champion two-year-old honors at the January 16 Eclipse Award ceremonies, worked five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 over the fast track at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. It was third recorded workout for the Mike Maker pupil since he arrived in South Florida for the season.

A roan/gray colt by Tapit, Hansen exits a head victory over favorite Union Rags in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. In his two previous starts on Polytrack at Turfway Park, he broke his maiden by 12 1/4 lengths on September 9 and romped home a 13 1/4-length winner of the Kentucky Cup Juvenile on September 24.

Hansen, who posted the second-fastest of 31 works at the distance Saturday, likely will make his 2012 debut in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at a one-turn mile on January 29.

Preakness winner Shackleford, an Eclipse finalist for champion three-year-old, returned to the worktab Saturday morning for trainer Dale Romans, posting his first move since a runner-up finish in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with a half-mile breeze in :50 4/5.

A flashy chestnut son of Forestry, Shackleford finished second by a head behind Dialed In in the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream last year and was fourth in the Kentucky Derby before his Preakness score.

Romans also sent out three-year-old prospects Dullahan and O'Prado Again, who are getting ready to join the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown trail.

"They all went well. We got just what we wanted for their first breezes," said Romans. "We hope to get Shackleford to the (Grade 1) Donn Handicap (on February 11). There is no specific target for the two three-year-olds, but we're where we want to be with them at this point."

Jockey Kent Desormeaux was aboard both Dullahan and O'Prado Again as they were clocked a half-mile in :51 and :51 1/5, respectively. Dullahan finished fourth last out in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill. The chestnut son of Even the Score earned his chance in that race by winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in his previous start.

O'Prado Again came around a little later in the season to win the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct on November 26, overcoming a troubled start. The roan/gray son of El Prado broke his maiden in an off the turf race at Keeneland on October 28 when making the fourth start of his career.
