Lass 'captivates' Busanda

First-time blinkers did the trick for Captivating Lass in the Busanda (Ross Woodson/Horsephotos.com)

Captivating Lass just got up to stick her neck in front of pacesetter and 4-5 favorite Sweet Seventeen in Saturday's $100,000 Busanda Stakes, the three-year-old filly companion event to the Count Fleet Stakes once race earlier at Aqueduct. Sent off the second pick at 9-5, the A.P. Indy miss ran a mile and 70 yards in 1:43 3/5 under jockey Mike Luzzi.

Sweet Seventeen moved up to take command of the race when the gates opened, establishing splits of :24 4/5, :49 3/5 and 1:14 1/5. Captivating Lass was content to stalk in second while racing just off the rail, and those two maintained their positions entering the stretch.

Sweet Seventeen appeared a clear winner, but Captivating Lass steadily whittled away her advantage. As jockey Ramon Dominguez desperately tried to get Sweet Seventeen to switch leads, Captivating Lass drew alongside and pulled in front to score for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

"She seems like a grinder and it took awhile to get her going," Luzzi said. "She's a big, rangy thing, by A.P. Indy, and it took the whole stretch to get her going. For a second, Ramon snuck away a little bit. (Captivating Lass) didn't have that burst of energy and speed, but if we just kept at it I thought maybe we'd grind (Sweet Seventeen) down. (Captivating Lass) responded and galloped out nice. I was impressed."

The winning filly returned $5.80, $2.70 and $3 to her backers. Sweet Seventeen had 4 1/4 lengths to spare on Lady Clara, who was followed under the wire by Terralba. Bourbonstreetgirl stumbled badly leaving the stalls and finished fifth, with The Winged Venus bringing up the rear. Almost a Valentine was scratched.

Captivating Lass captured her maiden debut at Parx Racing on October 1, winning by two lengths on that day, but was unable to overcome a troubled trip in her stakes debut next out and wound up seventh in the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct. This return to the winner's circle boosted her earnings to $101,600.

"(She is an) improving filly, bred very well," noted assistant trainer Art Magnuson. "(It was a) much tougher race last time in the Demoiselle, but we were disappointed. We thought we'd run better. She was green, learning. She's very tall, seventeen hands.

"We didn't like the way (the Busanda) was setting up. Ramon had everything go his way, (but) it worked out well. I saw Mike give her a little reminder down the backstretch. She wanted maybe to pull herself off the pace a little more, (but) he kept her in contention. On this track it's important. It was a great ride."

Captivating Lass was sporting blinkers for the first time in the Busanda, and also got the advantage of first-time Lasix.

"I think (the blinkers) helped," Magnuson said. "She has been training more professionally. We were waiting to go to blinkers; we like to have them run and get experience (without them). It's still a work in progress, but it was just one of those times where you do it.

"Because of what's going on in America, we're going to have some without, some with (Lasix)," he added about the addition of the medication. "We're just playing with it."

Magnuson indicated Captivating Lass could stay in New York, but didn't rule out a trip down south.

Born a Darley homebred in Kentucky, Captivating Lass is the first registered foal out of the Grade 1-placed Quiet American mare Folk, who triumphed in the 2007 editions of the U.A.E. Oaks and One Thousand Guineas. Captivating Lass' third dam is Family Style, the champion two-year-old filly of 1985 who ran third against the boys in the next year's Grade 1 Arkansas Derby prior to a third-placing in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks.

This female family also boasts noted sires Hennessy, Editor's Note and Hold That Tiger.
