AQUEDUCT NOTEBOOK JANUARY 26, 2012 by John Mucciolo There were no graded races this week at Aqueduct and racing was canceled on Saturday due to snowfall. Track Stats A total of 27 races were held over Jamaica, New York, venue, with favorites winning at a 48 percent rate and the top two betting choices combining for 74 percent of the wins during the week. From 27 races on the main oval, eight animals won in wire-to-wire fashion (30 percent). There was no turf racing held this past week. Horses on or just off the lead had the best of it during the abbreviated, three-day race week. Sunday seemed to be best for that running style, with three wire jobs and a slew of other winner pressing the early tempo. The public was good with their wagers again this week, with 48 percent favorites and 74 percent of the top pair of betting options coming through. Chalk is often good on the inner oval. Meet Totals
HORSES TO WATCH Thursday (1/19) 4TH -- SPORTSWRITER was a sharp winner in this spot, coming home in a solid :25 en route to the win for conditioner Rudy Rodriguez. The sophomore gelding should be plenty tough in his return for a barn that has been active at this meeting. 7TH -- GREAT GRACIE DANE surely looked the part in posting a romp in here and avoided a claim for trainer Richard Dutrow. The five-year-old mare could be trying stakes foes before long after this run. Friday (1/20) 8TH -- HONEST GOLD ran a good one at a big number in this spot for trainer John Kimmel, and the five-year-old could be rounding into a good form cycle. We still have hope for this miss. 9TH -- PEGASUS PAPOU was a clear second in this finale and could graduate before long with improvement in the near future. Sunday (1/22) 3RD -- STEPHANIE JAYNE left little doubt in here for conditioner Kiaran McLaughlin, taking over readily approaching the final turn and cruising home a 2 1/2-length winner under Ramon Dominguez. The four-year-old filly is bred to be a good one and could develop into a productive runner, on any surface. A Look Ahead The $75,000 Affectionately Handicap and rescheduled $75,000 Evening Attire Stakes are the highlights Saturday at Aqueduct.
