Flashback moved a step closer to next Saturday's
much-anticipated pre-Triple Crown showdown with Goldencents in the
Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe with a five-furlong workout Sunday morning
at Santa Anita in a bullet :59
under regular rider Julien Leparoux. It
was the fastest of 63 drills at the distance on the
fast main track. Working in company with stablemate Den's Legacy,
who was clocked in :59 2/5 under Erick Lopez,
Flashback "went nice" according to trainer Bob
Baffert, who would be seeking his fifth San Felipe
victory, including one with Horse of the Year Point
Given in 2001.
"So far, so good," Baffert said of the dappled
gray son of Tapit, who won the Grade 2 Robert B.
Lewis on February 2 by 6 1/4 lengths.
Flashback will seek to keep his unbeaten mark perfect in the 1 1/16-mile San
Felipe. The sophomore took his maiden debut on December 8 at Hollywood Park by 3
1/2 lengths prior to making his stakes bow in the Lewis.

Goldencents, meanwhile, breezed six furlongs
Saturday, going in a bullet 1:11 3/5 for
six furlongs. With apologies to Jimmy Walker, private clocker
Toby Turrell called the move by Goldencents, "Dy-noh-mite!"
Regular rider Kevin Krigger has the call on the bay son of Into Mischief for
the San Felipe.
Also on Saturday at Santa Anita, maiden winner Salutos Amigos went
five furlongs in company with I'm Wide Awake in
1:02 1/5. The Salute the Sarge bay captured his
initial start at Santa Anita on February 9, scoring
by 3 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong maiden special
weight for trainer Eric Guillot.
His stablemate I'm Wide Awake was clocked in
1:03 2/5 on Saturday and would his first career win
if he upset the San Felipe.
Probable for the San Felipe are Flashback, Goldencents,
Hear the Ghost, Kochees, Omega Star, Salutos Amigos and Tiz A Minister.
