Competitive Kilroe Mile on tap; 10 entered for San Carlos

While the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap is the main attraction Saturday at its namesake track, the stakes-laden program also features another Grade 1 event in the $350,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile.

The grass contest as drawn a competitive group of 10 runners, including last-out Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap hero Lochte, Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up Za Approval and recent Arcadia victor Winning Prize.

Lochte was sent off at 39-1 when making his stakes bow in the Gulfstream Park Turf on February 9, and shocked with a 2 3/4-length score for trainer Marcus Vitali. Prior to that, the Medaglia d'Oro gelding was a 3 1/2-length optional claiming winner over the course and broke his maiden in his sophomore finale last December.

Orlando Bocachica has been aboard for Lochte's last pair of wins and retains the mount on Saturday.

Za Approval spent all but two of his eight starts in 2013 competing at a mile, taking a pair of Grade 3 contests, the Appleton and Red Bank, before running second in two Grade 1 events, the Shoemaker Mile and Woodbine Mile. The Ghostzapper six-year-old stretched out slightly to add the 1 1/16-mile Knickerbocker to his resume before reverting back to eight furlongs for the Breeders' Cup Mile, where he held the lead in the lane before being passed by two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

Za Approval was just three parts of a length behind Wise Dan in the Mile, and the gray will be making his seasonal bow in this spot for trainer Christophe Clement. Joel Rosario has the return call on Saturday.

Winning Prize only raced three times last year -- taking a Del Mar optional claimer, finishing fourth in the off-the-turf Shadwell Turf Mile and just missing by three parts of a length when third in the Citation after leading throughout that contest. The Neil Drysdale charge returned to score in the Arcadia on February 1, where he defeated the re-opposing Tom's Tribute and Regally Ready, and gets Corey Nakatani in the irons.

Rafael Bejarano actually rode Winning Prize in the Arcadia, but has opted to stick with the Gary Mandella-trained Silentio, who got up in time to stick his nose in front on the Citation wire last out. Silentio finished third in the Breeders' Cup Mile and just missed by a nose in the Kilroe Mile last year.

Suggestive Boy put together back-to-back wins in the 2013 Arcadia and Kilroe, but wouldn't be seen in competition again until showing up for this year's running of the Arcadia. That Easing Along six-year-old could only manage a one-paced fifth last out and will try to show more in his second start off the long vacation.

Horizontalyspeakin and stakes victor Lakerville complete the Kilroe field.

One race before the Kilroe, 10 sprinters will go seven furlongs in the Grade 2, $250,000 San Carlos. Sahara Sky captured the 2013 running by three parts of a length prior to finishing second in the Carter Handicap and taking the Metropolitan Handicap in his final starts as a five-year-old. The dark bay son of Pleasant Tap returned on February 2 to be fifth in the Palos Verdes, and gets Rosario in the saddle on Saturday.

Sandwiched between the Grade 2 San Felipe, which begins Saturday's stakes action at Santa Anita, and the San Carlos is the $75,000 China Doll for three-year-old fillies going a mile on the turf. The race features the respective top two from last November's Miesque in Full Ransom and Savings Account, as well as Sweet Life scorer On the Backstreets and Blue Norther victress Sushi Empire.
