Coup de Grace finishes off weary Amsterdam rivals

Coup de Grace landed the final blow in the Grade 2, $200,000 Amsterdam at Saratoga on Saturday, wearing down the dueling speedsters C. Zee and Big Guy Ian in the stretch to take the 6 1/2-furlong dash for three-year-olds by three lengths under Rosie Napravnik.

A son of Tapit campaigned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm, the chestnut enjoyed a perfect setup as C. Zee and Big Guy Ian traded leads through splits of :21 4/5 and :44 2/5. Rating sixth in the seven-horse field, Coup de Grace made a four wide rally into the stretch, seized control with a furlong to go and drew off to win in a time of 1:15 1/5.

The 9-5 second choice, trained by Larry Jones, Coup de Grace paid $5.70.

"In his last two races he's found his style, coming from off the pace and making one big run. Rosie rode him perfectly today," Porter said.

C. Zee, at 7-1, fared best of the two pacesetters, turning back his rival and claiming second by two lengths over 6-5 favorite Captain Serious. The order of finish was rounded out by John's Island, Casiguapo, Big Guy Ian, and Tiznowforamerica. Rock Fall and Noble Moon were scratched.

An odds-on winner of his first two outings at two, a maiden at Aqueduct and an allowance at Gulfstream Park, Coup de Grace failed in his two-turn debut in the January 25 Holy Bull, checking in 10th after encountering trouble around the far turn. His return to sprinting has resulted in three stakes wins this season, beginning with a nose score in the Bay Shore at Aqueduct in April. After a sixth-place finish in the Woody Stephens after a slow start, he preceded this victory with a neck win in the Oh Say, a minor stakes at Delaware Park on July 5. His record now stands at 7-5-0-0, $408,100.

"I don't know all the best three-year-old sprinters in the country, but our numbers are good," Porter said. "We've got to keep him healthy and bring him back in four weeks (for the $500,000 King's Bishop on August 23), hopefully. We'll find out how good he is."

Bred in Kentucky by AGS Thoroughbreds Ltd., Coup de Grace is out of the Grade 3-placed Storm Cat mare Home Court, who is a full sister to stakes scorer One Nice Cat. His third dam is Jewell Ridge, who produced the 1996 older mare champion Jewel Princess. The chestnut's female family also includes Grade 2 winners My Princess Jess and Globalize.

Coup de Grace sold as a weanling for $215,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale and then brought $300,000 as a yearling at Keeneland September.
