Vincent S. Scuderi's homebred Paulassilverlining stepped up off her maiden victory and made her first start over a dry track to win Sunday's Grade 2, $200,000 Matron Stakes for two-year-old fillies at Belmont.

The Michelle Nevin charge finished fourth in her racing debut at Saratoga on July 27 and came back to the same venue the following month to break her maiden by a nose, both over muddy tracks.

"The first time (July 27) I made a mistake," said jockey Jose Ortiz, who has been aboard for all three starts. "She broke really well and I was pressed all the way. She didn't finish. The second time, I sat back a little bit and let her make one run, and it worked perfectly. My plan today was to do the same thing, to follow (Todd) Pletcher's filly (Paris Bikini) and everything worked out great. She's a great filly for sprints."

Paulassilverlining was content racing in midpack on the inside for the first half-mile as Evrybdymstgetstonz posted an opening quarter in :22 2/5. Bobby Flay's homebred and 4-5 favorite, Paris Bikini vied for the lead on the turn but faded just as it looked like she might take over. Evrybdymstgetstonzd continued to lead the field through four furlongs in :46 as eventual runner-up Skipalute pressed the pace on the outside.

Paulassilverlining angled to the outside for running room around the turn and swung four wide into the stretch. The daughter of Ghostzapper rallied to take over in midstretch and pulled away in the final furlong to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. Paulassilverlining covered six furlongs over the fast main track in 1:10 4/5 as the 5-1 third choice and returned $13.80 to her loyal supporters for the score.

"I couldn't have been happier," Nevin said. "Jose gave her a perfect ride and everything worked out for us. She's very smart and responds well to your hands. She'll go easy, and she's got some speed too. We'll see how she comes out of this and go on from there. Right now she's so sharp, we're willing to keep her sprinting."

Skipalute took second and was 2 3/4 lengths clear of Evrybdymstgetstonz in third. Save Rock and Roll, Paris Bikini, Darling Sky., Empressive Humor and Desert Image completed the order under the wire.

Paulassilverlining banked $120,000 for her first stakes score to boost her bankroll to $173,950 from a 3-2-0-0 line.

Paulassilverlining is out of the Grindstone mare Seeking the Silver, who is a full sister to stakes scorer Choctaw Ridge. She is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 victor Dads Caps. The bay's female family also boasts Grade 2 winner Boone's Mill.
