Leave the Light On wires Remsen

Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence's Leave the Light On took the early initiative and repelled 9-5 favorite Frosted by a half-length in Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Remsen at Aqueduct, earning 10 points toward the Kentucky Derby. Keen Ice, the only closer to get involved, launched a sustained rally and overtook Classy Class for third.

Leave the Light On, part of an entry with Market Conduct, was dispatched at 6-1 off a front-running maiden score. Under Jose Ortiz, the Chad Brown trainee used the same tactics here and secured the early lead through an opening quarter in :24 2/5. Classy Class was in close attendance as Leave the Light On got away with steady splits of :48 4/5 and 1:13, but could not keep up with the pacesetter turning for home.

Frosted, parked out wide throughout from post 13, picked up the baton to challenge the longtime leader. Although the favorite gave game chase for the entire length of the stretch, Leave the Light On could not be caught on a track that was playing friendly to speed. The winner negotiated 1 1/8 miles in 1:51 -- a couple of ticks off the 1:50 2/5 recorded by Condo Commando in the Demoiselle -- and returned $15.60.

"It was the perfect trip," said Ortiz, who was winning his fourth race on the card. "The way the track is playing today helped me a lot. We broke good and the plan was to take the lead like Chad (Brown) told me. He was relaxed, I tried to slow him down as best I could, and when I asked him to go he was there. Perfect training (job) by Chad Brown and his team."

"It was a very tough trip," Frosted's trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. "He ran well; we're happy with his race, other than not winning. He was very wide on both turns because of his post position, and he ran a big race. He was just unlucky. He's a fun horse to have, and hopefully he'll have a bright future."

Keen Ice checked in another eight lengths back, collaring Classy Class by three-quarters of a length. Next came Bodhisattva, The Truth or Else, Market Conduct, the slow-starting Thirtysevenliveson, Eh Cumpari, Combat Diver, Moonlight Bandit, Royal Burgh and Ostrolenka. Flashaway was scratched in favor of Saturday's Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.

Leave the Light On was racing on a fast track for the first time here. A non-threatening seventh in his muddy debut at Belmont September 13, the chestnut was entered in a turf maiden October 16. He stayed in when that race was transferred to Belmont's sloppy main track, and he went coast to coast by 4 1/2 lengths. With this successful stakes debut on his resume, he has earned $385,375 from his 3-2-0-0 line.

"(Between him and Market Conduct), he was the least accomplished," Brown said of his Remsen duo. "He really dragged us to this race in his training. We were using him as a work horse with the other couple of horses I had nominated for this race, and he kept outworking them. Jose came out and got to know him the last couple of times and I think that made this difference.

"We bought him with the two-turn dirt races in mind. If he's good enough, he'll get better as the distances go on. His owners have been looking for a Derby horse and they've been knocking on the door with a couple. I think they have a legitimate contender here. He's a very long-winded horse."

Bred by All Gold Racing in Kentucky, Leave the Light On initially sold for $65,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling. The son of Horse Greeley went to his current connections for $210,000 at OBS in April. Leave the Light On was produced by the unraced Mineshaft mare Lantern Glow, who is also responsible for Panamanian stakes scorer Harlan's Pure. This is the superb family of dual classic heroine Balanchine.
