Take Charge Brandi seeks third straight in Starlet

Take Charge Brandi can complete her dramatic form reversal this season with a victory in Saturday's $350,000 Starlet, a Grade 1 race for two-year-old fillies that will be held for the first time at Los Alamitos.

A daughter of Giant's Causeway, Take Charge Brandi hails from the immediate female family of champion Will Take Charge and Grade 1 winners Take Charge Lady and Take Charge Indy, but she did not perform up to her regal bloodlines when recording consecutive unplaced finishes versus graded rivals in the Adirondack, Pocahontas and Alcibiades. Those well-beaten efforts resulted in the D. Wayne Lukas trainee being dismissed as the 61-1 longest shot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, but bettors figured wrong.

Take Charge Brandi shot right to the front when the gates opened at Santa Anita and led wire to wire in the Juvenile Fillies, earning a career-best 101 BRIS Speed rating for the half-length decision. She wheeled back three weeks later in the Grade 3 Delta Princess on November 22 and displayed nice versatility, rating in second before handily proving best by a 1 1/2-length margin.

The Starlet represents her third start in a six-week period and her Hall of Fame trainer makes no apologies for the demanding schedule -- he is eying the Eclipse Award for champion two-year-old filly.

"I want to take the doubt out of the vote," Lukas said recently. "Let's make it easy (for voters to decide)."

The chestnut miss didn't completely scare away the competition in the 1 1/16-mile event.

The seven-horse Starlet field also features Grade 1-placed Feathered, who was beaten only a length when fourth in the Juvenile Fillies and has shipped back west for Todd Pletcher; Juvenile Fillies fifth-placer Danette, third in the Grade 1 Chandelier two back; Achiever's Legacy and Maybellene, the one-two finishers from the recent Desi Arnaz at Del Mar; and stakes-placed runners Don't Blame Me and Majestic Presence.

Victor Espinoza, who was up for the Juvenile Fillies but missed the Delta Princess due a scheduling conflict, will retake the reins aboard Take Charge Brandi.
