Long on Value proves just that in Canadian Turf

Long on Value (Value Plus) outran his 10-1 odds in Saturday's $150,000 Canadian Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park, driving to a comfortable 1 3/4-length decision under Joel Rosario. Purchased for only $3,000, the four-year-old has now won three of his last four starts, all stakes, and earned $504,198 for owners Wachtel Stable and George J. Kerr.

The Bill Mott trainee settled into a good stalking position from post 11 as Silver Freak (Badge of Silver) sprinted forward after the break to show the way through fractions of :23 4/5, :47 3/5 and 1:11. Long on Value launched his move on the far turn, rallying from midpack to be second entering the stretch, and accelerated to the lead passing the quarter-pole.

The winner rolled home much the best as a three-way battle developed for second, with the late-running Grand Tito (Candy) edging Aripenka (Bernstein) by a neck for second, with 9-5 favorite Jack Milton (War Front) another head back in third.

Off as the fifth choice among 13 rivals, Long on Value returned a $23.40 win mutuel after completing a mile in 1:34 1/5 on the firm turf.

Long on Value captured his first three career starts, including the Jamestown at Colonial Downs and Strike Your Colors at Delaware Park. The bay colt dropped his next eight starts, recording three stakes placings, before returning to the winner's circle with a victory in the Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park last September. He followed with a game score in the October 31 Twilight Derby (G2) and was exiting a seventh in the December 26 Mathis Brothers Mile (G2), the latter two starts coming at Santa Anita.

His career mark reads 15-6-2-1.

Bred in Virginia by Snow Lantern Thoroughbreds, Long on Value was purchased at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Maryland October sale. He's out of the unraced Orientate mare Long Message, a half-sister to multiple stakes victress Long Distance (Expensive Decision).
