Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) is on target for the
$1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) at Monmouth Park on August 2, owner Ahmed
Zayat announced on ESPN.com Thursday.
"I've decided to do the logical step and run American Pharoah at Monmouth,"
Zayat told ESPN.com. "I have complete confidence in Monmouth making this a very
special day. I want it to be a great day for everyone that will celebrate
racing."
The 1 1/8-mile Haskell has been one of the options bandied about for American
Pharoah, who wrote his name in the history books when taking the Belmont S. (G1)
last out on June 6 to become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.
The champion colt will attempt to carry the Zayat Stables color to yet
another Haskell victory following the 2012 triumph by Paynter. It would also
extend trainer Bob Baffert's existing Haskell record to eight.
"We were all waiting to see how American Pharoah worked and for me to give
the OK," Baffert told ESPN.com. "I liked the way he's training, the way he
worked and how he came out of it very well.
"With no hiccups between now and then, the Haskell is the obvious spot for
him." American Pharoah worked three furlongs in :36 2/5 on Monday at Santa Anita
Park in his first move since the Belmont Stakes. A trip back to New York could
be in the bay colt's future as Zayat also told ESPN.com that Saratoga's $1.25
million Travers S. (G1) on August 29 could be next if American Pharoah does well
in the Haskell. |
"The horse comes first and we intend to run him as many times this year as he
tells us he can," Zayat stated. "The hope is that he does in the Haskell what he
loves to do, and that is winning."
