Shotgun Kowboy becomes just second Okie-bred to win
Oklahoma Derby
Shotgun Kowboy (Kodiak Kowboy) made history on Sunday when posting a half-length
victory in the $420,000 Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park. Bred, owned
and trained by C.R. Trout, the dark bay gelding is just the second Oklahoma-bred
to win the
Oklahoma Derby since Clever Trevor captured the inaugural running in 1989.
Shogun Kowboy also gave jockey Cliff Berry his third win in the race when
finishing 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.91.
One race earlier, Include Betty (Include) gutted out a half-length score in
the $200,000
Remington Park Oaks.
There were seven total stakes at Remington Park on Sunday, and the undercard
was
highlighted by Ivan Fallunovalot's (Valid Expectations) 2 1/2-length win in
the $153,000
Remington Park Sprint Cup. The five-year-old gelding ran fourth in this same
race a year ago and this time around was using it as a prep for the Breeders'
Cup Sprint (G1) on October 31 at Keeneland.
