Redaspen rides the rail in La Prevoyante

Redaspen skimmed her way to graded victory on Saturday (Jim Lisa Photos)

Equivine Farm's homebred REDASPEN (Bianconi) commenced her bid on the inside approaching the final turn and drove through an opening along the rail late to capture the $200,000 La Prevoyante H. (G2) by three-quarters of a length over the good turf at Calder on Saturday. The chestnut mare, who went postward as the 8-1 fourth choice, reached the wire in 2:26 3/5 for the 1 1/2 miles to bag her initial graded stakes score. Trained by Rebecca Baker and ridden by Eddie Castro, the five-year-old returned $18.60, $7.20 and $3.40 while keying the $97.60 exacta, $348 trifecta and $1,032.20 superfecta (6-3-5-2).

"The owners were considering retiring her, but this race was coming up and a personal friend of ours recommended sending her to us and taking a shot," Baker said. "Now, I guess we'll have to talk about her future."

Green Girl (Fr) (Lord of Men) tracked in third early to the stretch but could not match strides with the winner late in a good runner-up showing. The 5-1 third choice paid $5.60 and $2.80. Dalvina (GB) (Grand Lodge), the even-money favorite, saved ground while in good striking position throughout but never fired in the lane while 1 1/4 lengths back. The sophomore was worth $2.20 for the show. My Rachel (Horse Chestnut [SAf]) tracked in second to the turn, took a brief lead in upper stretch and stayed on well enough to cap the superfecta as the 9-2 second betting option. Herboriste (GB) (Hernando [Fr]) was a length back and trailed by Eres Magica (Chi) (Stuka), I'm In Love (Zafonic), Sans Souci Island (Chester House), pacesetter Oh Deanne O (Dynaformer), Jive (Dynaformer) and Suaveness (Suave Prospect). Indiansong (Indian Charlie) was withdrawn.

Redaspen improved her lifetime record to 24-9-6-5, which includes a smart 12-6-1-3 turf line. This marked the fifth stakes win for the Pennsylvania-bred, following triumphs in the Mrs. Penny S., Navajo Princess S., Politely S. and Foxy J. G. S. A closing third in the My Charmer H. (G3) most recently, she has now banked $459,473.

The winner was produced from the winning Goldie Pops (Strike the Gold) and has an unnamed yearling half-sister by Monashee Mountain and a weanling half-sister by Saarland.
