Praying for Cash game in Long Branch

Hurley, Gallo and Scire LLC's PRAYING FOR CASH (Songandaprayer) got the best of a virtual match race with 1-2 favorite Latent Heat (Maria's Mon) in taking the $150,000 Long Branch Breeders' Cup S. (G3) at Monmouth Park on Saturday. Breaking alertly from the rail post beneath Jose Velez Jr., the bay colt stayed on the inside while Latent Heat kept a head in front of him for the opening half-mile, reaching the four-furlong mark in a swift :46 2/5. As the duo turned for home, Praying for Cash took a short lead and kept it throughout the stretch, pulling clear by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire, completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45 2/5 on the fast dirt.

Sent off as the 4-1 third choice, Praying For Cash was worth $10.60 and $2.40, while topping the $21.80 exacta. Latent Heat had the length of the stretch to pass the winner but tired late, holding the place by a neck. The 1-2 favorite paid $2.10. Victory Lake (Victory Gallop) closed well to earn third while three-quarters of a length back was Gottcha Gold (Coronado's Quest), who in turn was followed by Meadow Blue (Meadow Monster). Throng (Silver Deputy) scratched.

Praying for Cash notched his initial stakes score with this one, following a placing in the Coronado's Quest S. in his latest. The bay colt moved his mark to 6-3-1-1 with earnings of $151,630.

The winner was bred in the Sunshine State by Randy Coker and Joe Taylor, and fetched a bid of $150,000 at the 2005 Keeneland April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. He is out of the unraced Cash No Credit (West by West) and has an unraced two-year-old half-sister named Smile N Wave Boys (Straight Man).
