Jay Em Ess Stable's SUAVE (A.P. Indy) had no rivals close to him when he crossed
under the wire in his track record-smashing performance in the $300,000
Washington Park H. (G2) at Arlington Park on Saturday. The five-year-old
trailed in second beneath jockey Calvin Borel as Iosilver (Silver Ghost) led through splits of :23, :46 and 1:09 2/5,
then Suave took the advantage turning
for home. Even-money choice and defending
champion Perfect Drift (Dynaformer),
who had been in fourth throughout, managed to get up for second in deep stretch,
passing Second of June (Louis Quatorze), but he was not going to catch the leader,
who opened up a five-length margin by the time he completed 1 3/16 miles over a fast track in 1:53 2/5.
Ironically, the previous mark of 1:54 1/5 had been set by Perfect Drift in this
race a year ago.Sent off as the 7-2 second favorite, the Paul McGee-trained Suave returned
$9.20, $4 and $3.40 while leading exotics of $24.60 (exacta), $72.40 (trifecta)
and $267 (6-1-5-7 superfecta). Perfect Drift, second last out in the Stephen
Foster H. (G1), repeated that position to give back $2.60 and $2.20. Second of
June held on for the show, paying $3.20 at 9-2. Nolan's Cat (Catienus),
O'Connell's (Brz) (Jules) and Iosilver rounded out the order of finish. Three
Hour Nap (Afternoon Deelites) was pulled up at the half-mile pole and vanned off
the track.

Bred in Kentucky by Jan, Mace and Samantha Siegel, Suave is out of 1995
Ashland S. (G1) heroine Urbane (Citidancer), whose latest foals are an unnamed
yearling colt by Vindication and a 2006 full brother to the winner.
Suave comes off a wire-to-wire victory versus allowance/optional claiming
company as a prep for the Washington Park. With his second consecutive victory,
Suave improved his record to 25-7-6-2 with earnings of $1,345,923. Other major
scores on his resume include the Saratoga Breeders' Cup H. (G2) and Northern
Dancer S. (G3). Last year, the bay ran second in both the Jockey Club Gold Cup
S. (G1) and Clark H. (G2).
