Get Funky dances to Del Mar Derby win Keith Abrahams' GET FUNKY (Straight Man) emerged victorious by 1 1/2 lengths in Sunday's $400,000 Del Mar Derby (G2). The John Sadler trainee initially pressed Rateau (Rahy) through fractions of :23 2/5 and :47 1/5, but as the field raced along the backstretch, Get Funky took a narrow advantage under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., getting six furlongs in 1:11. From there, the dark bay stayed on strongly to complete the 1 1/8-mile affair in 1:46 1/5 over the firm turf. Sent off at 6-1, Get Funky returned $15.20, $8.60 and $5.20, while leading $1 exotics of $51.40 (exacta), $216 (trifecta) and $619.50 for the 4-2-8-10 superfecta. Obrigado (Fr) (Enrique) charged from the rear to secure runner-up honors, paying $7.60 and $4.80 at 6-1 while Union Avenue (Gone West) was another three parts of a length behind to give back $3.80 at 3-1. Porto Santo (Fr) (Kingsalsa) hit the wire 1 1/2 lengths farther back in fourth and was followed by Lightning Hit (Ire) (Orpen), Nonsensical (Point Given), Presidential Cause (Giant's Causeway), Rateau and Point Determined (Point Given). Icy Ridge (Ire) (Orpen) was scratched. Bred in Florida by Larry Stewart, Get Funky is out of the Storm Bird mare Miss Popularity, whose most recent foal is an unnamed yearling filly by Buddha. Get Funky comes off a close third in the La Jolla H.
