Brilliant win in Kent

Mill House's homebred BRILLIANT (War Chant) lived up to his name in Saturday's $492,500 Kent Breeders' Cup S. (G3) at Delaware Park, winning by 6 1/2 lengths. The three-year-old colt rated off the pace before effortlessly moving to the lead at the top of the stretch, and he widened his advantage en route to the commanding decision. Trained by Neil Howard and ridden by Mark Guidry, Brilliant earned his second graded win and improved to four-for-five on the turf.

Diabolical (Artax) and Kip Deville (Kipling) set sail for the early lead as soon as the gates opened and quickly opened a sizable advantage upon Brilliant in third, with the duo sparring through fractions of :25 3/5, :51 2/5 and 1:16 2/5 over the slow-playing, soft course. Brilliant launched his rally on the far turn, and the dark bay was in complete control turning for home, passing a mile in 1:42 4/5 with a 3 1/2-length cushion before finishing 1 1/8 miles in 1:56 3/5. After Market (Storm Cat), who entered the race unbeaten and was favored at even money, raced within striking range during the early stages, but he had no rally approaching the far turn and eventually faded to last.

Brilliant, the 9-2 second choice, paid $11, $5.40 and $4.30. Carnera (Old Trieste), who advanced with the winner on the far turn but could not match strides in the stretch, easily took second and gave back $7.80 and $5 at 7-1. The late-running Sea of Trees (Belong to Me) finished another 2 3/4 lengths lengths back in third at 46-1 and returned $13.40. Spider Power (Ire) (Royal Applause [GB]) came next and was followed by Kip Deville, Presious Passion (Royal Anthem), Mercurius (Lemon Drop Kid), Silent Roar (Unbridled's Song), Diabolical and After Market. Act of God (Black Minnaloushe), Rock Lobster (Mt. Livermore), Sir Classic Chris (Catienus) and Yankee Master (Yankee Victor) were all scratched. The exotics totaled $73 (exacta), $1,415.80 (trifecta) and $2,651.70 for the 4-7-5-14 superfecta ($1).

Bred in Kentucky, Brilliant is the second foal out of the unraced Fairest (Known Fact), whose granddam is Grade 1 winner Dancealot (Round Table). This is the female family of Grade 1 winner Furiously (Danzig). Brilliant, who has a 2006 half-brother by Seeking the Gold, earned his first stakes victory when capturing the Jefferson Cup S. (G2) two starts back, and he's now earned $557,528 from a 10-5-3-1 record.
