Court reigns in Kentucky Cup Sprint

Brenda and Phillip Robertson's REIGNING COURT (Glitterman) made his stakes debut a winning one on Saturday, surging to a clear lead in midstretch of the $100,000 Kentucky Cup Sprint (G3) and repulsing the late bid of runner-up Island Warrior (Cherokee Run) to record a half-length decision. Trained by Scott Blasi and ridden by Corey Lanerie, the bay gelding produced whopping mutuels of $53.40, $20.40 and $12.60 as the 25-1 ninth choice in a field of 12 three-year-olds.

An entry-level allowance winner in his previous start at Arlington Park, Reigning Court improved his overall record to 10-3-2-1, with $133,575 in lifetime earnings, after completing the six-furlong test in 1:09 over Turfway Park's Polytrack.

Chief What It Is (Crafty Prospector) showed the way early, getting the opening quarter-mile in :21 4/5, before being supplanted on the lead by Four Sevens (Unbridled's Song), who led the field through a half-mile in :44 4/5. Reigning Court was up close tracking the pace the entire way and surged to the lead at the top of the stretch, completing five furlongs in :56 4/5 before briefly drawing clear. Island Warrior, the 3-1 second choice, offered a good rally from midpack, but he couldn't get to the winner in deep stretch.

Place was good for $4.80 and $4.20, and it was three lengths back to the 16-1 Hallowed Flag (Southern Halo), who gave back $8.40 for third. The exacta totaled $247.60, and the trifecta $1,446. Four Sevens held on for fourth at 8-1 and capped the $32,483.40 superfecta (4-10-6-1). Right Place N Time (Coronado's Quest), 2-1 favorite Likely (Yes It's True), Curtain Bluff (Distorted Humor), Ghosttrapper (Notebook), Cognac Kisses (Dixie Union), Changing Weather (Storm Boot), Lucky Savanah (Best of Luck) and Chief What It Is rounded out the order of finish.

Bred in Kentucky by Haller Stables, Reigning Court was purchased for $40,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September sale. He's out of the winning Sovereign Mistress (Sovereign Dancer), making him a half-brother to John B. Connally Breeders' Cup Turf H. (G3) runner-up Dynareign (Dyanformer) and a full sibling to an unnamed juvenile colt.
