Bel Air Beauty reigns in Alcibiades

Bruce Lunsford's BEL AIR BEAUTY (Smart Strike) entered Friday's $400,000 Alcibiades S. (G2) with just a second in a maiden special weight to her credit. By the time the bay lass had completed 1 1/16 miles, though, she had broken her maiden and added a Grade 2 score to her list of accomplishments. If that wasn't enough, the Frank Brothers-trained juvenile padded the pockets of not only her connections but her supporters with payouts of $96.80, $33.80 and $18.80 as the 47-1 fourth longest shot in the field.

Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal) broke on top and proceeded to lead the 14-horse field through splits of :23 4/5, :48 4/5 and 1:13 1/5. All the while, Bel Air Beauty and jockey Fernando Jara were content to stalk in fifth while saving ground along the rail. Coming into the stretch, 5-2 favorite Untouched Talent (Storm Cat) moved up from her second spot to grab the advantage through a mile in 1:38 4/5, but Bel Air Beauty was just hitting her stride. Angling off the rail, and bumping with Cotton Blossom (Broken Vow) briefly, the eventual winner easily overtook Untouched Talent before the wire to record the three-quarter of a length score in a final time of 1:45 1/5.

Untouched Talent finished off the $624 exacta while paying $4.40 and $3.60. Her Majesty (Giant's Causeway) finished another 2 1/2 lengths back in third after rallying from near the back. Sent off at 7-1, the dark bay miss was worth $5.40 while ending the $4,886.20 trifecta. Cotton Blossom was on the bottom of the 2-10-13-11 superfecta that gave back a very nice $27,093.60. Gatorize (Exploit) was next and followed by Appealing Zophie, Get Ready Bertie (More Than Ready), She's Included (Include), Beautiful Venue (Came Home), Call the Kitty (Langfuhr), X Star (Pulpit), Pro Pink (Touch Gold), Lisa M (Banker's Gold) and Boat's Ghost (Silver Ghost).

Bred in Kentucky by Jaime S. Carrion, Bel Air Beauty is the second registered foal out of the stakes-placed Awe That (Boundary), who has also produced an unnamed yearling filly by Elusive Quality and a 2006 Lemon Drop Kid filly. With the Alcibiades victory, Bel Air Beauty has now earned $252,440, already paying off her purchase price of $210,000 from the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
