Bordonaro speeds to Ancient Title glory Fred Carillo and Daniel A Cassella's homebred BORDONARO (Memo [Chi]) shot to the lead right out of the gate and was never headed in posting an impressive one-length score in the $220,000 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup S. (G1) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trained by Bill Spawr, the speedster blurred through early splits of :21 2/5 and :43 4/5 before finishing off six furlongs over the fast track in a scintillating 1:07 4/5 under Patrick Valenzuela. The five-year-old was no secret at the windows when sent off as the 2-5 favorite, and he gave back $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10 while topping the $8.60 exacta ($1) and $39.80 ($1) trifecta. Thor's Echo (Swiss Yodeler) completed the all California-bred exacta with an excellent runner-up finish, chasing the winner in second for the duration of the race. The 10-1 fifth choice paid $4.40 and $2.20. Jungle Prince (Sir Cat) made up some ground on the rail to garner third, 5 3/4 lengths back. Show was worth $2.10 for the 10-1 fourth choice, while the trifecta gave back $79.60. Pure as Gold (Stolen Gold) was next and trailed by Spellbinder (Tale of the Cat) and Zanzibar (Arg) (Luhuk). Bordonaro atoned for his runner-up placing in the Bing Crosby H. (G1) last out with a sharp win in this one, moving his mark to 12-9-1-0 with earnings of $642,164 in the process. The exciting chestnut owns wins in the Count Fleet Sprint H. (G3), Vernon O. Underwood S. (G3), Sunshine Millions Sprint S. and California Cup Starter Sprint H. The winner is the second foal produced from the winning Miss Excitement (Rajab) and has an unraced two-year-old full brother named Fedrico, as well as an unnamed yearling half-sister by Mud Route.
