Sutra closes well to upset Frizette

Oak Crest Farm's homebred SUTRA (Meadowlake) closed along the rail in the latter stages to annex the $400,000 Frizette S. (G1) at Belmont Park on Saturday. Content to rate near the back of the pack early beneath Mike Luzzi, the two-year-old miss began picking off foes around the far turn and proved best for trainer Michael Stidham. The final time for the one-mile fast track event was a tepid 1:40 1/5, and the 12-1 shot paid $27, $13.20 and $8.30 while kicking off the juicy exotics: $964 exacta, $7,714 trifecta, $17,906 superfecta.

Enchanting Star (Service Stripe) took a brief lead while wide in the lane but could not keep up with the winner late. The longest shot on the board at 47-1 finished a good second by 1 3/4 lengths, and paid $41.60 and $18.80. Lilly Carson (Carson City) was prominent from the outset, led turning for home and was game in defeat while 3 1/2 lengths shy of the top prize. Sent off at 9-1, the chestnut was worth $8.10. Awesome Ashley (Unbridled's Song), the 2-1 second choice, finished fourth and concluded the superfecta (8-1-7-6). Dinner Break (Tale of the Cat) was next and followed by 2-1 favorite Allude (Orientate), True Addiction (Yes It's True), Our Fantene (Touch Gold), Meadow Breeze (Meadowlake) and Ticket to Seattle (Capote).

Sutra was exiting a heart-breaking runner-up finish in the Arlington-Washington Breeders' Cup Lassie S. (G3) and moved her career mark to 3-2-1-0, $288,000. She was bred in the Bluegrass State and is the second foal out of the winning Woodman mare Desert Liaison. Sutra has a pair of unnamed half-brothers, a yearling by Royal Academy and a weanling by Include.
