Beautyandthebeast scores in Las Palmas

Abergwaun Farm's homebred BEAUTYANDTHEBEAST (GB) (Machiavellian) saved ground early in the $150,000 Las Palmas H. (G2) at Oak Tree on Sunday, before moving to the outside in the stretch and rallying late to take the mile test by a head on the line. With Corey Nakatani holding the reins, the Neil Drysdale trainee was worth $6, $3.40 and $3 as the 2-1 favorite, and keyed the $12.50 exacta ($1), $132.70 trifecta ($1) and $516.90 superfecta ($1) (2-8-5-1).

Sandra's Rose (Old Trieste) quickly moved to the fore and set fractions of :22 4/5, :45 4/5 and 1:09 2/5, all the while tracked by Berbatim (Bernstein). Beautyandthebeast, in the meantime, was patiently waiting toward the rear and started her move once entering the stretch. By that point, Quemar (NZ) (Haafiz [Ire]) had taken the lead through seven furlongs in 1:21 2/5, but couldn't hold off the eventual winner, who finished the mile firm-turf event in 1:33 1/5.

Clinet (Ire) (Docksider) rallied from far back to take second by a half-length, returning $4 and $3.60 at 5-2, while Quemar gave back $5.60 at 23-1. Movie Star (Brz) (Royal Academy) was another 1 3/4 lengths adrift in fourth, followed by Strong Faith (Pioneering), Berbatim, Singalong (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) and Sandra's Rose, who faded badly at the end. Sohgol (Ire) (Singspiel [Ire]) was withdrawn.

Beautyandthebeast entered this event a two-time stakes winner, having taken the Sandringham H. last year in England and the Swingtime S. prior to this event. The four-year-old chestnut miss also was third in the Santa Ana H. (G2), and now shows a 14-6-0-1, $276,467, career mark.

Bred in Great Britain, Beautyandthebeast is out of the winning Nicola Bella (Sadler's Wells), who also has an unraced juvenile colt named Novo (Rainbow Quest).
