Sangrita scores in Chilukki Dorothy Alexander Matz's homebred SANGRITA (Mr. Greeley) posted her second straight victory when taking the $170,250 Chilukki S. (G2) at Churchill Downs on Thursday. The Michael Matz-trained sophomore miss stalked the early pace in second before taking over by the time three-quarters had been run in 1:10 3/5. From there, the bay filly held off Joint Effort (Runaway Groom) to cross under the line two lengths in front under Edgar Prado. Sent off the 9-2 fourth choice, Sangrita paid $11.20, $6.40 and $4 for finishing a mile on the fast dirt in 1:36 3/5. Joint Effort, who ran in midpack before rallying for second, gave back $4.60 and $3.20 as the 3-1 favorite, ending the $43 exacta. Indian Flare (Cherokee Run) held third by a length over Wild Fit (Wild Wonder), returning $3.40 and completing the $208.40 trifecta at 7-2. The 11-7-5-1 superfecta was worth $769.60. Lady Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus) crossed under the line another three-quarters of a length back in fifth and was followed by Trippi Street (Trippi), Humorous Gal (Distorted Humor), Mary Delaney (Hennessy) and Golden Locket (Storm Creek). Carmandia (Wild Rush), Prospective Saint (Saint Ballado) and Vague (Elusive Quality) were all withdrawn. Sangrita broke her maiden at second asking, scoring by an easy 12 3/4 lengths at Gulfstream Park in February. She made just one more start, a fifth to Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) contender Bushfire (Louis Quatorze) in the Florida Oaks, before being put on the shelf over the summer. Returning early last month, the bay lass captured a six-furlong allowance at Delaware Park, and now owns a 5-3-0-0, $152,265, record. The Kentucky-bred filly is out of the winning Seattle Slew mare Alvear, who has also produced Grade 1 victor Offlee Wild (Wild Again); Recoleta (Wild Again), herself the dam of Group 2 hero Silent Times (Ire) (Danehill Dancer); and an unraced juvenile filly named Clerico (Elusive Quality).
