Society Hostess passes them all in Monrovia

Moyglare Stud Farm's homebred SOCIETY HOSTESS (Seeking the Gold) was last at the head of the stretch in the $116,100 Monrovia H. (G3), but the Christophe Clement trainee found that to be to her liking as she flew home with a flourish to get up by a length at the wire. Piloted by Garrett Gomez, the five-year-old mare finished off the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:12 4/5 over firm turf and paid $5.60, $3.60 and $2.60 as the 9-5 choice.

Cambiocorsa (Avenue of Flags) sped right to the lead and carved out splits of :21 2/5, :43 1/5 and 1:06 1/5, opening up by 2 1/2 lengths in the stretch before getting leg-weary. As the leader tired noticeably, Clinet (Ire) (Docksider) surged to the front under Alex Solis, but that lead was short lived as she had little chance with the splendid rally by the winner late. The bay held second and paid $5.40 and $4.80, while completing the $16.30 exacta ($1) at 5-1. Kitty Hawk (GB) (Danehill Dancer) closed well from far off the pace to gain third at nearly 14-1, paying $5.60 and finishing off the $130.20 trifecta ($1). Somethinaboutbetty (Forestry) made up ground late to round out the $1,525.80 superfecta (6-11-10-2) ($1) at 31-1.

It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Maryfield (Elusive Quality), who was trailed by Vanguarda (Arg) (Sekari [GB]), Cambiocorsa, Danclare (Stravinsky), Bella Banissa (Good and Tough), Costume Designer (Capote), Selvatica (Forestry) and Honey Rose (Arg) (Lode). River's Prayer (Devon Lane) and Victory Spy (Victory Gallop) were both withdrawn.

Society Hostess ran her impressive mark to 16-8-2-2, with a bankroll of $370,458. The classy miss owns wins in the License Fee S., Elizabeth Bay S., Franklin County S. and Preis des Porche Zentrum, while placing in the Royal North S. (Can-G3) and Fairy Bridge S. The dark bay was a fast closing fifth in the recent Matriarch S. (G1).

The Bluegrass-bred was produced from the winning Storm Cat mare Touch of Truth, who is out of the multiple Grade 2-winning Grenzen (Grenfall) and is herself a half-sister to Grade 1-winning millionaire Twilight Agenda (Devil's Bag). This is the family of Irish highweight Refuse to Bend (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), a winner of four Group 1 races including the Two Thousand Guineas S. (Eng-G1) in 2003; Media Puzzle (Theatrical [Ire]), hero of the 2002 Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1); and Go and Go (Ire) (Be My Guest), an Irish highweight who took the 1990 Belmont S. (G1).

Society Hostess has a trio of unraced half-siblings, a three-year-old half-sister named Raffishing Look (Kingmambo), a two-year-old half-brother named Cheeky Try (Rahy), as well as an unnamed yearling half-brother by Smart Strike.
