Sugar shakes free in El Encino

Stronach Stables' homebred SUGAR SHAKE (Awesome Again) took the lead a few jumps out of the gate and never looked back in taking the $150,000 El Encino S. (G2) over the fast main surface at Santa Anita on Sunday. Trained by the red-hot Bobby Frankel, the four-year-old lass carved out splits of :23, :46 2/5 and 1:10 3/5 for the opening six panels, before holding a stubborn Kris' Sis (Forestry) at bay while stopping the teletimer in 1:43 3/5 for the 1 1/16 miles. The filly was sent off as the 5-1 third choice and rewarded backers with payouts of $12.60, $6 and $4 under David Flores.

Kris' Sis chased the winner from the half-mile mark to the finish, but fell a length short at the end. The 8-1 shot was worth $8 and $6 while completing the $51 exacta ($1). Wonder Lady Anne L (Real Quiet) closed from well off the pace to finish a clear third, but never threatened the top pair as the 9-5 second choice. The bay was 5 1/4 lengths shy of the runner-up and paid $3.20 while finishing off the $152.50 trifecta ($1) (4-3-2). Cross (Mighty) was another 5 1/2 lengths farther back and was trailed by even-money choice Cantabria (GB) (Dansili [GB]) and Preciousness (Exchange Rate), who was eased in the stretch.

Sugar Shake earned her first black-type score in here, boosting her bankroll to $208,256 from a 10-4-2-3 lifetime mark. The Kentucky-bred was produced from 1999 Cotillion H. (G2) heroine Skipping Around (Skip Trial), and has an unraced three-year-old half-sister named Maria Elena (El Prado [Ire]), as well as an unnamed two-year-old half-brother by Macho Uno.
