Ramazutti runs to victory at Gulfstream Anstu Stables Inc.'s RAMAZUTTI (Honor Grades) employed new tactics in rating off the pace, and the strategy worked brilliantly as the gelding rolled to a 1 1/4-length victory in the $150,000 Mac Diarmida H. (G2) over the firm Gulfstream Park turf on Sunday. The Anthony Sciametta charge broke well but rated in third behind Mending Fences (Forestry) and Gin and Sin (Go For Gin) through splits of :23 4/5, :47, 1:11 1/5 and 1:35 1/5 for the opening mile. As the field turned for home, Ramazutti moved three wide under John Velazquez and took over, holding a hard-charging Dreadnaught (Lac Ouimet) at bay while completing the 1 3/8 miles in 2:11 4/5. The 9-1 shot rewarded backers with mutuels of $20.60, $8.60 and $5.60. Dreadnaught closed well in the stretch but was never getting to the winner late. The runner-up paid $5.40 and $3.80 and completed the $50.90 exacta ($1) as the 4-1 second choice. Interpatation (Langfuhr) was last by the time he reached four furlongs but closed admirably to earn the show award another length back, worth $5.60 at 11-1. The winning trifecta ($1) was good for $426, while the 7-11-9-4 superfecta returned $4,537.90 ($1) with a late-running Mustanfar (Unbridled) finishing another neck back at nearly 8-1. Tissy Fit (Lasting Approval) came next and was followed by Mending Fences, Gin and Sin, Spider Power (Ire) (Royal Applause [GB]), Request For Parole (Judge T C), Can't Beat It (Atticus), Devil's Preacher (Pulpit) and Bee Charmer (Ire) (Anabaa). Ramazutti captured his first stakes race in here, upping his career mark to 19-4-4-1, $273,179. The five-year-old chestnut owns placings in the W. L. McKnight H. (G2), Pan American H. (G3), Louisville H. (G3), Japan Racing Association S. and Wicapi S. The winner was bred in Maryland by William Pace Beatson Jr. and brought $160,000 at the 2004 OBS March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. He is out of the stakes-placed Mining mare Mine Inning, and counts the two-year-old colt Avonian (Not For Love) as well as an unnamed yearling filly by Lion Hearted as half-siblings.
