Maryfield rolls late at Aqueduct Gorman, Mestrandrea and Perry's MARYFIELD (Elusive Quality) overcame a tardy beginning and traffic on the turn by finding her best stride when it mattered most, cruising past Candy Box (Running Stag) in the latter stages to take the $158,000 Distaff Breeders' Cup H. (G2) by 2 1/4 lengths at Aqueduct on Saturday. Trained by Doug O'Neill and piloted by Jorge Chavez, the six-year-old completed the six-furlong feature in a swift 1:09 3/5 and paid $15.20, $8.30 and $5.30 at 6-1. Candy Box broke on top and was joined in a few jumps by May Day Vow (Broken Vow), with little separating the duo through a wicked :44 2/5 opening half-mile. By midstretch, Candy Box began to inch away from her pace competitor, reaching five-eighths in :56 4/5, but the toll had been taken. Maryfield emerged with momentum and cruised by the leader late to earn the score. Candy Box was worth $15 and $7 while completing the $213 exacta at nearly 16-1. Oprah Winney (Royal Academy) ran evenly late to garner the show, paying $3.10 as the 5-2 second choice. The 1-7-6 winning trifecta returned $1,059. Victorina (Delaware Township), the 8-5 choice, closed from last to finish fourth and was trailed by Magnolia Jackson (Cape Canaveral), May Day Vow and Hello Lucky (Lucky Lionel). Maryfield bagged her third career stakes, and first graded score, in here while boosting her bankroll to $550,423 from a 24-7-5-1 mark. Last year, the mare captured the Very Subtle S. and Flower Girl H., with placings in the A Gleam Invitational H. (G2), Seaway (Can-G3), Desert Stormer H. and Bug Brush S. The winner was bred in Ontario, Canada, by Mike Carroll and John C. Harvey Jr., and attracted a bid of $80,000 at the 2002 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She was produced from the stakes-placed Sly Maid (Desert Wine).
