Duveen on the green in Palm Beach

Making his stakes debut fresh off a maiden score, Andrew Farm's DUVEEN (Horse Chestnut [SAf]) delivered a game run up the rail to take Saturday's $115,500 Palm Beach S. (G3) by a nose over 9-5 favorite Soldier's Dancer (Lost Soldier). With Mark Guidry aboard, the Dale Romans trainee stalked the pace along the inside and was poised to produce a strong bid, but he was stymied in traffic at the top of the stretch. Undeterred, Duveen regrouped and got up in time to complete the nine-furlong test in 1:47 2/5 on Gulfstream Park's firm turf. The 5-2 second choice returned $7, $3.40 and $2.60.

Soldier's Dancer rallied smartly on the far turn and took command in the lane, but the 122-pound highweight could not parry the winner's late thrust. The runner-up gave back $3 and $2.20 while ending the $10.60 exacta ($1). The 7-2 Storm in May (Tiger Ridge), who dictated splits of :24, :48 4/5 and 1:12 2/5, kept on for third, another two lengths adrift, to yield $2.40 and round out the $35 trifecta ($1). Brooklyn's Smart (Smart Strike) snared fourth, resulting in a 2-6-3-7 superfecta($1) that totaled $113.90. Next came Mashala (Orientate), One of the Best (West Acre) and Brainy Benny (Ire) (Barathea [Ire]).

Duveen improved his record to 6-2-1-0 while nearly tripling his bankroll to $92,494. After finishing off the board in his first three starts on the main track, he switched to the turf and was just caught late in a Gulfstream maiden special weight event. The dark bay stepped up in trip to 1 1/8 miles next time out against similar company and drew clear by 4 1/4 lengths.

Bred in Kentucky by Richard Brodie, Robert Scanlon and James Buckley, Duveen RNA'd for $140,000 as a two-year-old in training at Keeneland last April. He is out of Grade 3-placed Casanova Storm (Storm Cat), who has also produced the stakes-winning Cherry Hill Lady (Grand Slam) and a yearling colt by Chapel Royal.
