Skip Away provides A. P. Arrow with elusive stakes win

Allen Paulson Living Trust's homebred A. P. ARROW (A.P. Indy) had placed in five graded stakes in his career, but the five-year-old had yet to record a stakes win until Saturday's $114,500 Skip Away H. (G3) at Gulfstream Park. With Edgar Prado in the saddle, the Todd Pletcher-trained horse snapped a string of three straight stakes placings, reaching the lead in midstretch and gamely holding for a head decision over Rehoboth (Wagon Limit). The 1-2 favorite paid $3, $2.40 and $2.10.

Gottcha Gold (Coronado's Quest) sprinted to a clear early lead and established splits of :23 1/5, :46 4/5 and 1:10 3/5 before retreating. A. P. Arrow rated in third, one spot behind Political Force (Unbridled's Song), who rallied to a slim advantage in upper stretch and passed the mile mark in 1:36 1/5. A. P. Arrow collared his rival and was fully extended to the wire by the fast-closing Rehoboth. The winner completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 3/5 over a fast track.

"We've known all along he's a quality horse, but to be a closer on the dirt on certain tracks can be tough," owner Michael Paulson said.

Now sporting a mark of 16-4-4-3 with $600,961 in earnings, the Kentucky-bred A. P. Arrow keyed the $11.10 exacta ($1) with the 16-1 Rehoboth, who gave back $6.20 and $2.10 after finishing a length better than the 5-2 Political Force, who paid $2.10 and capped the $26.30 trifecta ($1). Palladio (Lycius) ran late at 23-1 to complete the $119.40, 3-9-1-5 superfecta ($1). Touched By Madness (Sword Dance [Ire]), Tap Dancing Mauk (Louis Quatorze) and Gottcha Gold came next under the wire. Dry Martini (Slew Gin Fizz) and Welcome Again (Awesome Again) were scratched.

Out of the winning Mr. Prospector mare Garimpeiro, A. P. Arrow is a half-brother to Grade 1-winning millionaire and sire Geri (Theatrical [Ire]), who finished second in the 1997 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1); stakes winner Clure (Theatrical [Ire]); and Almonsoon (Giant's Causeway), who was runner-up in Saturday's Orchid H. (G3) at Gulfstream. The chestnut also has an unraced juvenile half-brother named Vindgari (Vindication) and an unnamed yearling half-sister by Theatrical [Ire]).
