Fergus Galvin's MARY DELANEY (Hennessy) took the lead soon after the
start of Wednesday's $200,000 Madison S. (G2) at Keeneland and was never
headed en route to a 1 1/2-length victory under Edgar Prado. The Eddie
Kenneally-trained four-year-old miss was sent off the near 3-1
favorite in the 10-horse field and paid out $7.80, $4.60 and $3.60 for
completing seven furlongs in 1:22 1/5 on the Polytrack.
Ginger Punch (Awesome Again) bumped with the winner at the start and
raced in fourth throughout before coming five wide to take second by a
half-length over Leah's Secret (Tiger Ridge). At 4-1, she returned $5
and $3.80 while ending the $39.20 exacta. Leah's Secret, sent off at
4-1, closed down the middle of the track to take third by a head, giving
back $3.60 and finishing the $168.80 trifecta. Bright Abundance (Quiet
American) lost the nod for third, but completed the $549.80 superfecta
(5-6-8-7). She was followed by Modjadji (Pioneering), Morethanaprincess
(More Than Ready), Miss Norman (Artax), Yolanda B. Too (Two Punch), Hot
Storm (Stormy Atlantic) and Atlas Valley (Capote). Annika Lass (Mister
Jolie) was scratched.
Mary Delaney, bred in Kentucky by Mary Anne Parris & Ashford Stud,
captured the Wishing Well S. and Queen S. prior to this one, which
pushed her current win streak to four straight. The bay lass earned her
first graded victory here and now boasts a 11-6-2-0 career mark and more
than doubled her earnings to $246,156.
"That was a concern," Kenneally said referring to the short amount of
time between this race and her last one. "We've only had 18 days since
her last race. We were careful. We didn't train her very hard in the
meantime and it worked out perfectly. She got a great ride from Edgar.
We're delighted with it."
Purchased for $85,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, Mary Delaney
is out of Crafty Emerald (Crafty Prospector). |
