My Typhoon swoops to Jenny Wiley score

Live Oak Plantation's MY TYPHOON (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) found her best stride late and collared Precious Kitten (Catienus) a few jumps before the wire to capture the $200,000 Jenny Wiley S. (G3) at Keeneland on Saturday. Originally scheduled for the turf course but transferred to the Polytrack following substantial rain in the area, the Bill Mott charge was in good position throughout before putting in her winning stretch run, completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 1/5 under Eddie Castro.

Mauralakana (Fr) (Muhtathir [GB]) unexpectedly went to the front early, establishing splits of :24 3/5, :50 and 1:14 3/5 for the opening six furlongs. Turning for home, Precious Kitten overtook the pacesetter but was soon challenged by My Typhoon, who had more momentum and finished a neck clear at the finish. Champion Wait a While (Maria's Mon), the prohibitive 1-2 favorite, broke tardily and never really recovered, making a brief move while wide before tiring to fifth in her Polytrack debut.

The winner went off as the 6-1 fourth choice and paid $14.80, $5.60 and $5, while keying the $76.20 exacta, $508.80 trifecta and $1,302 superfecta. Precious Kitten, the 5-1 third choice, was 4 1/4 lengths clear in second, worth $5 and $4.40. Fantastic Shirl (Fantastic Light) closed from the rear to garner the show at 20-1, good for $6.80. Mauralakana completed the super as the 9-2 second choice and was trailed by Wait a While and Essential Edge (Storm Cat).

My Typhoon improved her mark to 17-7-3-3 with a bankroll totaling $823,361. This was her fifth career stakes success, following victories in the Mint Julep H. (G3), Mrs. Revere S. (G2), Virginia Oaks and Hilltop Breeders' Cup S. She has also placed in four stakes, chief among them the 2005 Garden City Breeders' Cup S. (G1). The miss attracted a bid of $2,935,359 at the 2002 Tattersalls December sale.

Bred by Sunderland Holdings in Ireland, the winner is out of 1993 French highweight older mare Urban Sea (Miswaki), who captured that year's edition of the famed Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1). Urban Sea has excelled herself as a broodmare as well, producing 2001 European champion three-year-old colt Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), now a promising young sire; 2002 Italian highweight Black Sam Bellamy (Sadler's Wells); Group 3 winner Urban Ocean (Bering [GB]), a highweight at three in Ireland in 1999; English Group 3 winner and classic-placed All Too Beautiful (Sadler's Wells); and English stakes winner and dual classic-placed Melikah (Ire) (Lammtarra). She has an unraced three-year-old filly named Cherry Hinton (Green Desert), as well as a two year named Sea's Legacy (Green Desert) . Urban Sea is a half-sister to King's Best (Kingmambo), winner of the English Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-G1) in 2000.
